fast blinking blinkers

I have a 2004 Limited. My left hand turn signal, as of a few days ago, does not work on the exterior of the truck, and blinks very fast in the inside of the truck. This happened a whole back, lasted for a week or two, and then went away.

Any idea what this might be? An electrical short? A bad fuse? For some reason, I'm pretty nervous driving without that blinker. Traffic around here has gotten SO bad and it's just not safe to be chaning lanes without that signal.

On my old subaru, that meant that your turn signal light bulb had burnt out and needed to be changed. I would try that.

Exactly. A rapid blink is an indicator of a burned out bulb.

The 4Runner has a feature whereby you can tell if a turn signal bulb goes out by making the circuit blink rapidly. I had this same problem several months ago and it turned out to be a loose socket on the rear light. Turned it tight and hasn't been a problem since.

All vehicle blinkers work from the same type of device. A piece of spring steel that expands and contracts from power. Sometimes even when it filament becomes very thin, it will blink quicker as the current draw has increased from decreasing resistance of the smaller wire. Household light bulbs may even get brighter just before the tungsten filament narrows and breaks. A loose connection or another bulb sharing the same circuit can have similar results.

My right blinker started blinking twice as fast as normal, on the exterior the front light does not blink at all and the back signal works but blinks real fast like on the inside. I checked the bulbs and connections on the lights and everything was just fine. I think it may possibly the actual flasher (thing that makes clicking noise under steering wheel), but I can't determine which box under there is the flasher. If someone has a sollution, or could post a picture or something that would be great!!! thanks.

typically flasher relays control both sides - i.e. you will have one relay for the blinkers and another relay for the emergency flashers. If the front is not blinking at all, I'd recheck that bulb ( you can swap the left and right front signal bulbs and see if the problem follows the bulb).

Bulbs are easy as soon as the auto store opens.

When ever you get a fast blinking light, it is close to being burnt out. I replace both sides at the same time as the other one is most likely to go soon. I do this with head lights as well. If one blows then I replace both.

I have an 03 Limited and i've replaced the front passenger side directional bulb twice in the past week and a half, but the bulb keeps blowing. The rear passenger side directional continues to work just fine aside from the faster blinking, of course. Does anyone have an idea of what would cause this?

95% percent of the time it is a burned out bulb glad to hear you were able to fix your problem good job

Did you check the wiring to make sure it was OK when you replaced the bulb?

Hate to bring up an old topic but I'm not getting anywhere with my issue. Had my turn signal bulb blow, changed it, didnt work. Beofore it blew it would sometimes work (usually in the morning) and then stop working for about a week before it finally went. headlight blew, changed it, (it worked periodically also) it worked for about 2 weeks, fog light blew too. all on the passenger side, checked and changed all the fuses, wiring looks to be ok, i can see the ground making good connection, fuses are in tight. My turn signal bulb is not being blown just quits working i guess, the headlight bulb did in fact blow on the old and the new one. driver side works like a champ, rears are working fine :frusty:
