Fast Clicking/Ticking Sound

Anyone recognize this sound? CVs, exhaust leak, bad injector? I cannot find it for the life of me and I need to solve it so I can sell the vehicle asap. Sounds like it's coming from right in front of the drivers seat but literally NOTHING is loose on my car. As best as i can tell it doesn't react to engine speed or 4WD vs 2WD vs neutral, and is only caused by vehicle speed (40 and above to be exact) but since I can't find anything rattling I'm starting to think it might be mechanical (?)
Oddly enough it started happening after I replaced the steering rack (with OEM) and took out my diff drop. But neither or those should sound like a baseball card in a bicycle... Most helpful info I found was Sean and Timmy talking about a failed trans, but neutral and drive have no change on it
Anyone have any ideas? I'm at my wits end with this, i swear at this point I could map out the entire front end with my eyes closed cause I've poked around so much over the past week. The most likely culprit I found was my fender liner so I put a couple pop rivets in to make it extra tight, but no luck. :frusty:
Just fishing for ideas here. Tried putting a gopro under the car but it didn't make it any more clear

Sounds like the alternator pulley bearing. Take the belts off one at a time and run it may be it's one of the pulleys.

That's a damn fine idea. Unfortunately it doesn't happen in park, I can sit there and rev the engine to 6000rpm and won't get a single peep. In fact I won't get a single tick until I hit about 42mph, then it flips on like a switch... Still, might not be a bad idea to take the belts off and give the pulleys a turn to see if they're on their way out - they probably got 150k on them
I'm also curious if maybe some bearing in the front diff is going out. I did the ECGS bushing a while ago but there still has to be carrier bearings somewhere in the mix (right? I think?)

Couldn't be the vac lines around the brake booster, could it?

Possible cracked heat shield on exhaust system or floor shield for exhaust vibrating causing the tick.

Funny enough when I was poking around today i looked at the floor shields above the exhaust and was thinking perhaps it's something similar, and there's a heat shield hanging out somewhere I haven't noticed... I remember seeing some other post that was resolved by something like that, some sort of shield or deflector was the culprit
Thanks for the idea, I'll look more carefully tomorrow for one hidden near the firewall or something. Other than that, everything is tip top. Literally the only three things I touched were skid plate, steering rack and front diff - that's it, didn't even take the tires off. And I can yank each of them around with all my weight and they don't budge a single millimeter, they're solid as can be

Unfortunately no. The only loose component in my engine bay is the positive lead going to the alt. And I do mean that is the only thing, like seriously nothing else. Long story short I've basically been in this boat for 3 years straight now, and as a result of tracking down noises constantly every last thing under the hood has been remounted properly, tucked away, replaced and otherwise ensured it's not possible to make any noise whatsoever. Which just makes it more all the more frustrating because it doesn't seem to affect anything; not for longer than a couple weeks that is :ranger:
That's what makes me think it's mechanical, despite all my intuition saying otherwise. I just can't see anything that could possibly rattle around at this point. Either that, or a bearing I can't see... I mean, it's just a car, it's not like they have a ton of them or anything :lol:

Speak of the devil; drove to work today and now have a horrible metal squeak coming from the passenger side at 60 and above... that's just ****in great. Which means since January I've developed a thump at idle, a howl at 20, clicking at 40, and chatter at 60. :rant:

It's possible the exhaust manifold is cracked and opening up when it's warm on the drivers side and you hearing valves hitting. Granted when the exhaust opens up it it gets louder too. I am out of ideas.

That said, as I was driving today I was taking a turn, heard a decently loud "PA-TING" sound and the clicking stopped for the rest of the drive.... which is pretty relieving, but also kinda concerning ound: We'll see if it stays that way

That said, as I was driving today I was taking a turn, heard a decently loud "PA-TING" sound and the clicking stopped for the rest of the drive.... which is pretty relieving, but also kinda concerning ound: We'll see if it stays that way

That's very possible. The little stone love to tick.. the loud noise might have been it cing out..

Could this be the clicking people talk about with the charcoal box? I've always heard people mentioning it before but I can't find anyone that's posted a video of it. Mostly because whenever someone does post about it they seem to drop the subject once they're reassured it's normal. I was under the impression that it was a singular, loud click from the purge valve (which I also have and ironically also developed out of nowhere, but that's a different story), but again it's hard to find anyone actually diving into any detail about it
Idk, just grasping at straws here. Still haven't figured it out, but it is seemingly getting a little less frequent
Thankfully I found the squeak that arose last week too, was an ABS line rubbing in the retaining clip. One step at a time :trophy:

When I first read ur post, my initial thoughts were that it could be one of the VSVs on the charcoal canister. My sons 1999 had a similar fast clicking noise and it did turn out to be the VSV on charcoal canister It was the one closest to the firewall. Good luck

Solved it I believe
The bracket holding the trans line to the rad directly in front of the power steering lines was broken and halfway in. Zip tied it up and the ticking immediately went away :trophy:

My wifes 2002 had a ticking sounds we thought was a lifter. I finally found it one day poking around in the engine bay on the drivers side by the brake master cylinder. The evap solenoid was laying on the fenderbody and it transmitted the sound like a microphone. Very annoying.

Nevermind, clicking came back this morning. Was a little bit quieter than it has been, and took a little longer to start up, so not sure what that means. I'm almost confident it's related to my front diff or CV axles as those are the only things I've touched both times between the noise starting and slightly diminishing. What's weird is it seems much more prominent when it's cold out - once it warms up outside and I drive home from work I almost NEVER hear it... very frustrating

Well my new purge valve is coming in the mail today or tomorrow so hopefully that'll fix it but I very severely doubt it

Well my purge valve didn't seem to make it any better... if fact if anything it's gotten worse since then. Now instead of just a ticking that eventually drowns out, it begins chirping rhythmically about once a second like a parakeet. Arguably far more annoying than the ticking as it's easily heard over the radio :doh:
