Fatmat install. Photos.

Got the Fatmat install finished tonight. I had enough for the two front doors and one rear door (I ordered five pieces that were 16" wide, about 2.5' long). I'll have to order some more to finish the job. More than likely I'll do the boot as well. It's not easy working in the door panels but I'm glad I pushed through. I won't really know the full results until I get the last door completed. Took some photos. Nothing new but I thought maybe they might help someone in the future.

Have you done your floorboard yet? I did mine about a year or so ago and it has really made a big improvement in decreasing road noises:

I haven't done the floors yet and wasn't really planning on it. But I think I might. Any excuse to pull things apart and put them back together.

Did you do the inside of the skin as well as the inside of the frame?

Very much so. I noticed the difference in road noise immeadiately. I still need to do my doors (and my headliner someday), but for now, what I've got works great.

LOL, I did NOT use Fatmat when I did my floor board and cargo area...I picked up some peel-n-stick stuff from McMaster-Carr instead. (Bob of 4Runners.org recommended it to me.) I used 4-5 rolls and it was only $100 total. That's cheap considering I covered the entire floor from the gas pedal to the rear hatch.

I also chunked the flimsy oem carpet padding and replaced it with some very dense residential carpet padding I found on sale at Lowe's. That + the PnS and my cabin is much quieter than before. :bigok:

One of the problems with all of these types of noise dampening systems is that they lose their accoustical qualities over time. No matter how much you pay for the dynamat, fatmat, whatever, after two years their noise-deadening qualities are cut in half.

On the other hand. Spray on bedliner has 90% of the accoustical qualities of dynamat, is cheap and lasts forever.

Whatever system you chose really does make a HUGE difference in road noise.

Ok just a couple of questions about this stuff. Never thought of doing this to my vehicle. I mean come on guys it's a truck not a Lexus!
How much weight does this add to the vehicle? These trucks are slow enough without the added weight.

Negligible at best. I've only used 4 & 1/2 rolls of PnS thus far...and IIRC, each roll only weighed 3-4lbs or so (roughly 15bs total). Granted, that's just a guess as it's been a while since I did this mod, but regardless, I remember this stuff being light weight. Load up your 4Runner with a few gallons of milk and that will weigh more than this stuff.

It's not too expensive to do the entire 4runner as Rock Slide mentioned. I mean if you use a really good product like Second Skin, sure you could probably end up spending over $1,000.

I would think spray on bedliner would be heavier and you also couldn't remove it. Seems like it would be harder to apply too.
