Feds look at frame rust

No, its a 2014 I bought about a month ago... Didn't notice the rust until putting on the front valence. Have you taken a look at your 4runner lately?

I highly doubt the parts were replaced. The bumper support that looks mostly intact is pretty bad as well, I pushed a screw driver through it easily.

The bumper supports have the same foam covering the holes that would allow them to breath/drain.

While it may be rust, the pinch weld in the crossmember in front of the radiator looks bulged, that's only what you see if it's been in an accident. They can't fix that part without replacing yuge parts of the front end.

If you are talking about the second image from the top where my finger is a couple inches from the 90degree bend. That "bulge" area was all rust flake about a 1/8" that came off with some scraping of a flat head screw driver... Very certain this truck has never been in an accident.. Just lived in a very rainy environment with little highway miles.

Mine looks nothing at all like that. Minor surface rust on the welds is about it. I live by the great salt lake. Morton salt's salt ponds are only about 40 miles from my house. So - salt is basically free and the highway maintenance folks use a lot of it. But even then it's probably not really at all like the constant humidity you get in Hawaii. You've got salt and humidity together a lot.

I'd be really upset if my frame looked like that after 6 years. I think that is a dangerous amount of rust and if it really hasn't been damaged, Toyota should be looking into it. And I would never be able to use my winch. It attaches to the frame horn plates. It would rip them right off in that condition. That rust doesn't have to spread all that much further back before you're looking at probably needing a complete frame swap. I'm not an expert on how to stop it, but it would probably be worth finding out what you can do to get it fixed before it becomes something like a total loss of the vehicle.

It's a real bummer to see this however it happened. Do you see anything like this on other local toyota frames?

Nice, sounds like you are good for a while with some light rust preventatives. Have you tried feeling around under the foam about 3" inboard of the recover hook? There is a spot weld that is just a bowl for water to sit...Mine is completely gone lol

Yeah im pretty bummed on it man.. Are the frame horn plates what supports the front structural bumper? In terms of repair I picked up the cross member 2010-2020 Toyota Cross-Member 51021-60041 | Toyota Parts and am looking for some fab shop to help me out. I'm having trouble finding the bumper frame parts though.

I actually asked a random guy who parked next to me a couple days ago to take a look at his 2016 and his cross member was just starting to show rust.

Note I havent looked at anyone elses bumper frames/ horn plates
