Feeler: 2000 T4R, 130k miles

I have the opportunity to trade in my current car, which is a little too small for a family (plus dog) and hobbies, for a 2000 4Runner SR5 with 130k on the clock.

I would most likely get around 8500 for my trade and they are looking for around 7000 for the Toyota.

I am coming from a 525i BMW (freaking expensive to maintain and too small) and hoping to see more reliability.

Thoughts on this deal? What can I expect from the 4Runner repairs/problems wise?

I just bought my first t4r, a 99 with 140k. I sell wholesale auto parts so I asked about 15-20 of my shops what they though of the 4runner before I bought one. I couldn't find 1 mechanic that had anything bad to say about the 3.4l or the suv at all. They all said they are easy to work on also. Keep up on the maintenance and drive it for another 300k that's my plan.

You won't look back!! The 4runner is awesome and as mentioned above, vry easy to work on...Depending on your confidence you could do just about every single service at home. Make sure the timing belt has been done on the one you are looking at...Other than that, just going through and completing some randome prevenative maitanence and you will be good to go!!!

My only issue with working on the 4runner is how little hand space you always have, i can tell it was designed in japan and not america, and im not really that big at all.

If your a big guy ( I am not a small one ) The seats are a little uncomfortable. Other than that you will love a 3rd Gen. I love mine and I have been a DIE HARD Jeep guy for the past 15 years.

Pros: Dependable ( nothing like setting out on a trip with not worrying)
Great off road
Nice to drive around town
Bullet proof ( depending on how you use it)
Takes the whoops at speed like a well tuned race truck
Lots of space ( remember I am coming from Jeeps)

Cons:
Gas is okay
Seats are snug if your a bigger guy
A lot of body to worry about off road
Some parts can be pricey

SInce I bought my sr5, nearly 2 years ago, I've done mostly regular and pro active maintenance. BEing a used vehicle I replace all the brakes and shocks to my preferred brands, newer plugs and wires, and new rubber. I also replaced both axle fluids and transfer case fluid.

PRoblems I had were sway bar links busted, bad throttle position sensor, and replaced both O2 sensors to combat bad fuel mileage.

THanks to this site owning a 4runner has become simple and fun.
