Feeler?? Kelly Flats, Seven Mile, Crystal Mountain??

Feeler... Kelly Flats, Seven Mile, Crystal Mountain, Moody Hill??

Hey guys, just wanted to throw this out there and see if anyone wanted to try to get a trip or 3 together sometime soon up here in N. Colorado? I know that if the weather permits, these 3 trails and several others should be opening on May 15th, or soon after. I havent had the chance to run any of them yet, since we just moved up here the end of last year, and they were already closed, but sure want to take a stab at them real soon. Maybe do some camping too? Any takers on this, especially some of you more seasoned off roaders to be a lead/guide?

Those are all really fun trails. I'd come along but my 4WD isn't working at the current time (I think the front diff is damaged). It's not the best idea to go yourself, but if you don't have any takers Seven Mile is nice and very tame

Yeah, itll be another month before they even open up. Think you might be up and going my then? Seven Mile is open now. I started to head down it about a month ago, but since I was by myself, and it was totally snow covered, I decided to turn around. But yeah, hopefully someone will join in on this. Im anxious to do kelly flats. Wanna go up heart attack hill for sure. Gonna go look at the chutes, but not even gonna think about attempting them!!
 
I could definitely be game in a month or so. I'm going to take the front end apart today and see what's wrong so hopefully everything will be working by then.

Kelly flats is actually pretty tame aside from some of the harder lines up heart attack hill and the chutes. Heart attack hill is fun though, you just have to keep your momentum because it's mostly loose rocks and dirt. The chutes is awesome. I watched an XJ attempt it, and a double locked TJ make it. The TJ leaned into the rock on the left however and broke his back window. I'd be afraid of doing the same thing even if the 4runner was capable enough to get up it. Either way it's a really nice area. I think Crystal Mountain is my favorite trail in that area, however I still haven't done Storm Mountain so the jury is still out on that one

Yeah, ive watched several vids on the chutes, and I wont even think about attempting it. I want to keep my runner looking halfway decent at least! Heart attack hill looks very fun, even the harder lines look like fun, but like you said, keeping momentum is a key. I was actually out by Crystal Mountain last weekend, but of course they had all the gates closed still, so we headed a little further west on Buckhorn and found quite a few roads out there to play on, mostly really tame stuff like Old flowers road, but enough to rock you a bit and flex some.
 
How about a Memorial Day Run at Kelly Flats? Campgrounds are right across the Poudre from the trailhead. We will probably bring our little pop up camper so my daughters will have a little shelter and just camp for the weekend.
 
Surely we can get a few folks together for this run? I know its still over a month away, but better to plan now. I know there are a few members in Fort Collins area?

I'm in fort collins, yeah Storm Mountain is a fun trail, done it a few times. Old flowers road is also fun, but easy. A run up to Storm, Crystal or Kelly Flats when they open would be great.

Sweet! Thanks for chiming in! Ive heard of Storm Mountain, but not sure where that one is? Ive ran Old Flowers a couple times when we first moved up here the end of September last year, just for scenery and pictures, but it was a fun trail just to get away. It would be great to run with someone who has ran these trails before!
 
Yeah they are kinda confusing when you're doing them for the first time. I actually may be confusing Storm Mtn with Crystal lol, either way there are a definitely a few quality trails nearby, which is what I'll be sticking to this year for the most part if gas prices keep going up...

Ok, great. Yeah, I was just out there a couple weeks ago, but of course Crystal and Moody were closed, but we went down quite a bit further to Ballard Road I think, and there was a lot to play on out there. So yeah, sounds like a plan. I agree too, with the gas prices, I think we are going to have to stay close to home as well, and all of those trails are within an hour from us, so that works perfect. Maybe if you know of anyone else, we can get a decent trip planned out for mid to end May when everything opens.
 
I go wheeling with http://threeg4runners.freeforums.org/index.php Good group of guys with mostly 3rd gen 4runners based out of Denver. We should be able to get a couple of them up here for a run. I recommend joining that forum if you want to start talking with other local wheelers.(some of them post here as well.)

If I'm still in Colorado I'm game for Memorial day. It's Monday, May 28th this year. Right now I'm looking for jobs and hoping to stay in CO, but I've been applying out of state at bit too so we'll see what happens

Yeah, definitely keep me informed. I think itll be a fun weekend. Im gonna head up Thursday the 24th to make sure I get a spot in the campground, and we are gonna stay all weekend. Pm'd you my contact info just now.
 
just wanna keep this alive. still looking for some folks up to a memorial day run, or any run for that matter, to kelly flats or somewhere near after those trails open up. right at a month and they should be open.
