Feels Good To Be Back -1997 restore and build thread-

First off, let me just say, selling my old 4runner was a big mistake! I had sold my 1993 4runner roughly a year maybe 1 1/2 years ago, to get a gas mileage car, a 2006 HHR. I absolutely hated that car, loathed its very existence. A little piece of me died every time I had to start it. I had to replace engine twice, (second was warranty, but still..) and the mpg wasn't that good anyway. I wanted my 4runner back, or at least another one. So, I have never been happier to sell a car, get it out of my life.

First thing I did was buy a 1997 4runner less than an hour after selling the hhr. I found this one on CL, roughly a week and half before selling my HHR, but could never get an answer when I would call. I called around and went to check out 2 others that were in my price range. Knowing that they have a tendency to have frame rust I checked and politely walked away from both. They were bad, very bad. Then when I had cash in hand from the sale of my hhr, I tried to call on the first one once again, and I got an answer! turned out I was only 5 minutes away from him. So I rushed to look at it. First things first I checked the frame, it was good! After a thorough inspection, I told him I would take it, I didn't even try to bargain, and he says "ok I just relisted it today because I have had no calls on it. So I lowered the price" $500 less than I planned to spend! Only issues I found were the front looked like it kissed a light pole, small power steering leak, and missing LR fender flare. All pretty reasonable.

So the point of this is to document the work done to it as I go, and to keep track of the changes. It isn't going to be to wild, still a daily driver but a few mods to make it stand out and more purpose built.

Anyway, my New to me toy, 1997 4runner limited.
So far I have rebuilt the front end, semi straightened the passenger fender(hoping to find a used one the same color) found a rear flare the same color at a local yard, removed the running boards, and minor little maintenance. Mounted the LED bar on the front, I had it laying around and felt like drilling holes in my brand new bumper anyway.

Planned mods are a mild lift and more aggressive tires, haven't settled on a size yet. Better armor, sliders, and later some more aggressive bumpers, rack, tire carrier. More to come, but first, Maintenance!

If you took the time to read through this, Thanks! And if you have any suggestions, feel free to chime in.

Its nice your back. I really dont like the 2nd gen because they had there own issues. Upgrading to a 3rd gen is a big difference.

Your issue was not trying to buy a gas mileage car. Thats an okay thing to do.

Your problem was you bought an HHR.

You're going to LOVE 3rd Gens compared to 2nd Gens. I had to work on my 3VZ-E engine almost every week to keep it running right. And the 22-RE was absolutely gutless if you had one. 110 HP in a 4,000 pound truck...

3rd Gens have a lot more "luxurious" feel to them as well but still keep their off-road functionality intact. Only thing I miss is my 5-speed transmission, so hard to find nowadays.

GJ on cleaning up the front end too, looks great.

This is very true, no more late model gm for me. I should have never strayed away from my Honda & Toyota roots, we have a die hard old 5th gen accord, with near 300k miles. And I will probably be picking up another 5th or 6th gen accord soon. But the 4runner stays regardless. My wife even hid the title from me so I am not allowed to sell it. (I may have a problem, I'm 27 and have owned 103 cars since I was 16. short attention span)

And I loved my 2nd gen, but had the constant nagging feeling the head gasket was about to go. Never did, but yes they have their own set of problems, that's why I sought out a 3rd gen

2nd gens are hit or miss. With a motor/trans swap I love them!

Your wife is smart on keeping that accord. I love accords, such good cars and with a good supercharger kit can be street sleepers.

Finally progress! After a couple months of maint. and sorting out hit and miss small issues, I have progress on the restore and soon on the building up aspect.

So in Feb. to Mar. it seemed I was getting kicked in the teeth for 2 months solid. First the rear end started making so much noise I couldnt hear my self think if I was going over 45mph. I pulled the rear end out to check, my gears looked brand new(218k miles) but the bearings felt like trash so I went to price differential bearing kits at various un-named locations, cheapest of which was over $500, for bearings and seals. So I cringed and called the dealer. Using one of my connections through work I was able to get everything OEM for about $275?!? so I got OEM and threw on new rear brakes while I was at it for less money. I am beginning to see OEM is the only way to go.(unfortunately my phone crapped out and I didn't get many pictures of this process, but most of you know what rear end rebuild consists of) While it was down, my clutch went out of my back up car(golf gti) and the starter failed a week later on the wife's honda. Got it all back together and a week after, my alternator seized up on the 4runner... it was a depressing time. :frusty: Got the oe alternator rebuilt for only about $70 locally, and life was once again good.

Fast forward to last Friday I got an alert from Row52 that a 1999 limited was fresh in the local pick n pull and I dove on it. Got everything to update my console (I HAVE CUP HOLDERS NOW!) and a lot of other misc. interior parts, switches and trim.

Also had a heck of time finding a good drivers leather seat. Looked at cover, reworking it and everything else, just didn't have to budget at the time. The 1999 limited had matching interior to mine so I had an idea and snagged a good passenger seat($32), took it home and took it apart. Then tore my driver seat apart and swapped bottom cushions.

For anyone wonder the bottom cushion is a very simple swap and direct bolt in! Just remove the seats, take off plastic side cover trim. 3 screws and a pop it off. Then there are 2 12mm bolts on each side of the cushion holding it to the frame, remove and unplug any wiring clipped the bottom and swap it over. The 1999 had a passenger presence sensor in the cushion I just left unplugged and installed it in my 1997.

So after my console and seat swap. My interior is looking fresh and new, Also snagged a nice set of OE Limited floor mats from the 1999

So on with some pictures!

This is how it sat for almost 2 weeks, between waiting for parts and fighting in between rain... it was almost finished here

Very nice work! Was the cupholder console a straight swap from the original? No problem with the e-brake? I also have a 97 with no cupholders (unless you count that flimsy popout thing in front of the vent) and a clean swap would be nice (few skills and fewer tools, so far).

That's a clean bottom seat you picked up. Unfortunately for me there are no 3rd gens at all in our junkyards.

Welcome back to the club! Nice work on the front end.

a 2006 HHR. I absolutely hated that car, loathed its very existence. A little piece of me died every time I had to start it. I had to replace engine twice

I had to google HHR because I was blanking on what that was. Now I remember...

Hey, it is a pretty straight forward swap, something I didn't find in any write ups on it was the e brake handle is easy to swap, the newer on is offset to right side more, but its on 2 bolts and the cable nuts to switch over. Also grab the duct work behind the vents if you do the center dash swap with it. The ect switch and rear window switch moved to the blanks to the left of the steering wheel and the wire was long enough to go straight over the all I did was cut open the loom, pull the leads I wanted out, re-wrap the loom and run them over to blank spots, I'll get pics later if I remember.

I plan to repin the connectors to use the switches above the climate control after get the wire diagrams but this worked for now.

Yep, Independence. The one I got parts from is off winner rd, and I know the motor trans and rear end(elocker) is gone as of saturday about noon. someone works fast...

LOL... I just called them about that very truck an hour ago!!

I live in the Lawrence KS area, but I work in KC.

Small world !!

I got lucky my friend was there at the yard friday when they opened and it hadn't been touched so he started pulling stuff before I got there to dig in to it. I went back saturday morning to get a few more small things and saw a guy had cut the front frame off by the firewall and was taking everything! He had claimed the rear end too. When I was leaving I saw 2 more 3rd gens pulling in the parking lot, I figured I knew what they were after.

My third gen

Enjoy your Runners while you can guys. I just drove my 97 for about 5 years and lost it due to cancer :( Took good care of her but the salt they use these days just ate the frame right up.

Oh man.

Please tell us that you're talking about rust and not something wrong with you.

I know what you mean, I almost bought one before I found mine. Test drove it, interior was good, body looked good and we agreed on a great price but before I went to the bank I had a thought that I should take a quick look at the frame. I'm glad I did, saved me a world of hurt, but it was tragic, the lower half of the frame rails were gone on over 1/3 of the chassis and one rear link was hanging the other side was "tacked" back on with piece of 1" flat bar... I looked at the guy, and politely declined purchase...

Well its been a little while since I updated, just maint. and basics getting taken care of, but I have had bit of distraction, my wife and I had our first baby boy. Lukas was born happy and healthy and his first ride was in a 4runner! Took care of the long over due valve cover gaskets, pcv valve and grommet, new upper rad hose, and inspected the timing belt to make sure it had been done before I bought it. Also had an idle issue, revving way to high intermittently. New temp sensor took care of that. I picked up a new set of wheels for the 4runner too. from an 05 sport. I love the look, made the 4runner look a lot newer. I'll have to get a better picture of them on later, need to give it a wash. Anyway, on with the pics! (nothing special, but its progress)

a lot of tear down for valve covers, but at least it looked good inside! (that is one dirty engine bay..)
