I started this thread because I feel as though I have picked the brains of Harper7 & BFlan enough, thanks to both of you for all of your help. I'll start by saying that I'm a girl and I've tried finding the answers to some of these questions but sometimes reading a digging through the forums you guys get a little over my head and I don't know what the F you are talking about.

What I have and what I want...let's pretend like money is no object.

I have the ToyTec 3/2 spacers installed currently along with the front differential drop kit and 20" wheels and BFG AT's.

Rides rough (a small bump will almost put your teeth through the roof of your head)
Brakes abrupt
Chrome Roof Rack vs. TE
Giddy UP!

1. Remove spacers completely and go with the Icon Suspension System or keep spacers on and do? to improve ride? If you keep the spacers what will work with them to better the ride?

2. Icon Suspension System, what's the difference in the stages?

3. Would replacing the brakes help at all?

4. Has anyone with a TR5 replaced the roof rack with a TE yet? Does it fit the same or do you need to make modifications?

5. More power please! What can I do to get some more giddy in my giddy up? I understand it's not a race car but everyone could use a little more power...

God I know that's long, sorry! Thanks in advance!

1. Remove spacers completely and go with the Icon Suspension System or keep spacers on and do? to improve ride? If you keep the spacers what will work with them to better the ride? Did you look at the Toytec (affordable), Radflo or Overland (technically for 4th gen)? I assume you have stock springs. I would guess they are way too soft and contributing to the rough ride (as whacky as that sounds). Spring replacement is the only thing that'll help IMHO. Maybe some OME 883's and less spacer, that'd be cheap and good.

2. Icon Suspension System, what's the difference in the stages?

3. Would replacing the brakes help at all? I wouldn't condemn the brakes or spend a dime until you get the suspension right. I suspect you're applying the brake and getting all goofed up with nosedive.

4. Has anyone with a TR5 replaced the roof rack with a TE yet? Does it fit the same or do you need to make modifications?

5. More power please! What can I do to get some more giddy in my giddy up? I understand it's not a race car but everyone could use a little more power...

4. Has anyone with a TR5 replaced the roof rack with a TE yet? Does it fit the same or do you need to make modifications?

I believe they both mount into the same holes, so in theory you can replace the SR5/Limited rack with the TE rack.

I'll be replacing my TE rack with a BajaRack once they are out. Once the new rack is on, my stock TE rack is for sale!

Thanks! Good point on waiting on brakes until suspension is done. I called ToyTec today about the shocks and the guy said he would go with the Bilstein adjustable front and back shocks...they're of course on back order.

Where are you located at? I talked to the Toyota dealer here in town and since they aren't offered as a so called "part" yet, they want an arm, leg, and my dog for the TE roof rack!

Why not just paint the roof rack end covers black? Even though it is not 100% black like the TE, I like the look as much as the TE. The reason I did not paint the roof rails black is because I move my rack bars around and figure it would scratch up the paint. It is a lot cheaper than buying a TE rack...

Try this for an easy 50HP gain: 50 Free HP

The 4.0L supercharger is weak. I can't imagine why anyone would pay $5k for an extra 34 HP (13% increase). The supercharger for the 3.4 L gives a 75 HP gain (40% increase).

But what does the torque gain & curve look like? The 5th gens 4.0 already has many horses...

2. Icon Suspension System, what's the difference in the stages? That's kind of a confusing thing as they package stuff together with there best front and rear shocks and some of it is overkill IMO. They do sell separate components so you can build as you go if you can't afford the package.ICON Vehicle Dynamics
This is a great setup for less.
Icon Front Ext. Travel CO's $925 pair
Icon Rear Extended Travel Piggyback shocks $600 pair(You can get the regular 2.0 inch Icon rears shocks for $200 but the 2.5 inch are a better match for the front 2.5's)
Light Racing Upper Control Arms $379
Icon ($200) or Sway A Way($205) rear springs -The SAW's are a little softer and give a 1/2 inch less lift in the rear.
Add about $150 shipping
So for a little over $2000 plus install you will have a real sweet suspension and really only about $400-500 more then the Toytec Ultimate set up

3. Would replacing the brakes help at all? Doubt it, you should get used to them

4. Has anyone with a TR5 replaced the roof rack with a TE yet? Does it fit the same or do you need to make modifications? There will be used TE ones coming up as full bolt on roof racks from Baja,Gobi and others become available. Same bolt pattern on the roof on all 5th 4runners.

5. More power please! What can I do to get some more giddy in my giddy up? I understand it's not a race car but everyone could use a little more power... Custom Exhaust shop and Borla or Magnaflow mufflers will gain you a few horsepower and make it sound like your going faster. TRD said they have no immediate plans on a Supercharger for the dual vvt-i engines. Plans do change, but definelty won't be any time soon.
God I know that's long, sorry! Thanks in advance!
My 2 cents.....Good Luck!

But what does the torque gain & curve look like? The 5th gens 4.0 already has many horses...

Fair enough, but boost is boost. The 3.4 L supercharger has 10-12 PSI boost, while the 4.0 L supercharger only has 5 PSI boost.

I can't find any torque/hp curves, but one would expect the curves for each engine (for either supercharger) to look relatively similar but shifted upward.

My point is only that $4k or $5k is an awful lot to pay for 34 HP, particularly when that is only a 13% increase. If you were going from 34 HP to 68 HP, that would be a different story . . .

IceNomad, I would rather pay the extra for the TE racks. I really like the Gobi's but I'm trying to avoid getting to the point that it doesn't fit in the garage. I went into a parking garage the other day here in town and it was CLOSE!

rjfowler, I opened this link, there are so many things that came to mind but I'll keep it clean….

Harper7, is moving to Denver an option, you are a wealth of knowledge! You are an extremely useful man, I hope your old lady appreciates you!

I would love to do Borla exhaust, I just need to find someone here to do them. I've had Borla's on all three of my Ponies, love them, great sound. Again, I didn't know how it would affect the sound of a V6, I'm scared. I don't want it sounding like a 16 year olds rice burning wanna-be scooter.

You guys all rock, I really appreciate the input!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its not a weak s/c. On my tacoma I went from 221rwhp to 300rwhp with just the addition of the s/c and then changed the pulley which brought it up to 320rwhp. HP and TQ #'s are even.

I sure hope they make a s/c for the new 4.0 cause I can't see myself downgrading in the power my truck makes now. I do want to get a 5th gen 4r in a few years.

Oh and I paid $3750 for my s/c and installed it myself.

How do you assume the SC will only give you 34hp when it hasn't even come out yet?? The specs you are looking at is for the older 4.0 V6 (without the dual variable valve timing) that gets 236hp and 266 lb-ft. The entire kit is $3,700 on trdparts4u.com and gives that engine 304hp and 334 lb-ft, however purchasing a pulley from URD will get you over 330hp. With the new engine the gains should be similar. Then you can look at some doug thorley long tube headers, exhaust, and an apr-x1 if/when they make one for the new engine.

I am sam, I have a magnaflow on mine, and am located in Denver. You can have a listen anytime you would like :) I have a great muffler shop that would be more than happy to put it on for you, I think I paid like $200 for everything. I totally agree with everything everyone has said about suspension. You get what you pay for, I am saving for the Icon fronts, and no doubt that UCA's make a ton of diffenence too.

URD has a kit in the works for our motor. I have been talking with them off and on and they just tell me to keep checking back to see if its completed yet. There stuff is sweet is makes a lot of power!!!

Great thread, Sam...as another girl I've been confused by a lot more than you though so far, but you are encouraging me to ask more questions.

Just a few more:
  1. On the SR5 with the soft shocks we have, how long can we expect those stock shocks to reasonsbly last with typical road driving plus some 10-20% off-road but not extreme rock crawling (just your typical washed-out very rocky dirt tracks)? While I like the smooth ride on pavement, I do notice the extreme side-to-side movement on bumps and off-road (nose-dive does not bother me too much as I try to brake slowly and avoid jackrabbit accellerations.) I don't really want to get into replacing the suspension until the current set seems like it is wearing out.
  2. What is the best kind of shop to look for to install such a parts list as Harper provided? Is this parts list the same for stock 17" rims as Sam's 20" rims?
  3. Sam - when you say your current ride is rough, do you mean on pavement, or off-road, or both?
  4. Harper - when you say this Icon parts list will give a sweet suspension for Sam's SR5, how will it feel on pavement vs off-road? Will it feel very stiff like a typical truck when you hit bumps, or is it a nice medium between the current soft, bouncy shocks and a very stiff hard feel? (i.e. my husband's Honda Element - while a very practical vehicle - rides lousy on bumps, esp. if you are sitting in the back - extremely stiff, feels like there are no shocks, everything rattles like crazy when you are on rough pavement).
  5. One more dumb question: what is the purpose of spacers, other than looks? Does it provide more stability on curves since the tires are further apart?
Thanks so much for all the great info, you guys are a wealth of knowledge...and I second Sam's comments on Harper!

If that is true, then I stand corrected. I assumed that the 4.0L supercharger currently advertised on trdusa.com was one and the same, but was only advertised for the FJ Cruiser and Tacoma due to clearance issues or something. If the one eventually made for this 4.0L engine has similar performance improvements as the 3.4L supercharger (or the other 4.0L supercharger), I will be getting one.

Thanks guys.

[I guess I should also say I was not even aware that this 4.0L was different than the previous 4.0L. I have a 2000 Tacoma with the 3.4L, and I have not been in the market since then until I just bought my 4Runner.]

Thanks MountainDog! I figure they'll either answer my questions or tell me to get back in the kitchen. :moping:

It's rough on pavement, say going over speed bumps or pulling out of the driveway. I know, I know, this is not a car nor is it meant to drive like one. I get it, but this is an extreme hit that it takes. ToyTec said to make sure the spacers were installed correctly but they could be in backwards and I wouldn't know any F'n difference....I think it just needs longer shocks but what I think and what I know are why I'm on here. :dancin:
