Fender Flare Paint Peeling

I did a search for similar occurrences and didn't come up with much. I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this. The paint on all 4 flares is peeling where they meet with the metal. It's crinkling away from the metal is the best way to describe it. I forgot to take daytime pictures but hopefully the ones I did take will show the issue sufficiently. I talked to a buddy that paints cars and he offered to assist but depending on what the cost would be, I thought about getting him to spray the whole truck. Anyone familiar with painting vehicles want to chime in on whether or not it's worth it? It's a black 2005 sport.

Is your truck parked outside all the time? My truck is silver and was parked outside till the last year or so but has similar issues on the tops of the fender flares, side view mirrors, and top facing sides of the grill. Mine are not very noticeable as the silver hides it well but I feel it was caused by he years out in the sun causing oxidation on the plastic. My 2 cents.
 
Yeah, it's always outside. The grill is dull and the side view mirrors are in terrible shape. The paint is matte at this point. I'm going to get it detailed and see what it looks like after but obviously no amount of waxing will correct the paint on the flares.
 
I am in the process of looking to buy one and ran across a 2003 that was silver with the same problem but worse. It was a California car but was at a dealer here in Dallas. It was a killer deal but I couldn't get passed how every fender and bumper was faded and dull. I hope this doesn't happen to all of them...
 
i as well am having a good bit of oxidation on my fender flares and the bottom trim on the doors. the California sun is killing my clear coat. i have thought about doing a little sanding to see if that would help but it has been way to hot lately to try anything
 
same thing here in NC. parked outside most of its life. fender flares peeling, the rest of the paint looks really good.

My 2004 Limited- Titanium Metallic- is doing the same thing; I wash weekly and wax bi-monthly but it did not stop the cancer. The paint on the metal is great, but the paint on the plastic is done.
 
Fender Flare & other paint issue

Hi folks, I just had my 2007 4runner in for some bumper repair work and a fender flare painting that was peeling badly. My 4runner is in the driveway in the Tampa, FL sun most of the time. On top of that the paint on the hood and roof is looking bad. Lots of swirling scratches and some white sploches on the roof. They tried to wet sand it to no avail. I am meticulous with this vehicle and have never had a problem like this with any other vehicles. The sides of the vehicle still look new. Body shop guy at Toyota said it looked like the hood and roof had been re-painted. I said that's funny in that I bought it new from your dealership and I never had it painted. To me it looks like a defect in the clear coat or the paint. Can't handle the sun. It's the nautical blue color. Guess I am venting more than anything else. May harass the dealer a bit more. Said it would cost $1500 to re-do both.
 
03 4 runner with the same flare cracking. The only way to get rid of this is to remove the flares,door side,and rear flares and sand and repaint.
These panels are attatched with different types of colored clips which are expensive and are one time use only.Easch flare requires about 8 clips some are orange and some are blue.:Cry:
 
I know this has nothing to do with what you are asking, but if you do end up having it resprayed, have you considered doing the flares with black line-x or the likes? I saw this done on someones truck in the 5th gen forum and it turned out pretty nice!
 
Just got a quote from a local body shop, $350 Think I'll put that on the waiting list after leveling kit Spridertraxs and BFG tires.
