Fender Flares

Could i buy stock plastic fender flares for a 1997 4Runner?

I have seen offbrand flares for them, but that is it.

Yep, I just installed a pair of rear mudguards for my 96 4Runner that I ordered online from toyotapartspeople.com / 1-800-729-7560 and are the OEM versions.
Depnding on what you're looking for the parts # are -
PT413-35965-PF - Right front
PT413-35965-DF - Left front
PT413-35975-PR - Right rear w/ door piece
PT413-35975-DR - Left rear w/ door piece
PT413-35966-PR - Right rear mudguard
PT413-35966-DR - Left rear mudguard
When I was looking, I found a number of sites that had them but one thing that I found was that they had a tendency of not updating their web page so what you see on their web page may not be the right price so I'd call 'em first.
The flaps I bought were listed as $17.25/piece but ended costing me $25 but this is still way less than my local Toy dealer - they wanted $37/piece.
You can also check eBay - I've seen them there too.

Bushwacker sells a set that mimics the OEM Limited flares for about $250.
I had a set on my '97 and I had them painted glossy black which was a nice contrast to the dark red body color. They are just a tad thinner than the OEM Limited flares but that's a good thing since the OEM flares look too wide with stock width tires.

You will need to buy a set of mudflaps which I just picked up a set of cheap but nice looking flaps at PepBoys and they worked great.

On the bushwaker site, it says you need running boards. At least this is how I read the site. Can you confirm whether running boards are needed? Also, if you buy the limited style flares, would it look funny if your front bumper was not a limited one?

My kit didn't require me to keep the boards and it worked fine. Limited bumpers are the same as the regular bumpers,the bumper change was in '99 on all 3rd gens. The Bushwacker kits also include two types of front flare pieces that connect to the bumpers.

Speaking of fender flares, the 97 T4R I recently bought has a stock set. I was sloppy giving the car a wax and got a lot of wax on the flares which have a white haze on them from the wax that won't rub off.

Any ideas on what to use as a solvent that won't hurt the flare or the adjacent paint?

My kit didn't require me to keep the boards and it worked fine. Limited bumpers are the same as the regular bumpers,the bumper change was in '99 on all 3rd gens. The Bushwacker kits also include two types of front flare pieces that connect to the bumpers.

These front flare pieces you talk about are what confused me on the limited flares. I thought these were part of the bumper. Now I just have to decide if I want to go with the limited style flares...

To get wax off black plastic use "Back to Black" or something similar. Most autopart stores sell it near the wax and tire shine products. Your black plastic "grainyness" will determine how effective "Back to Black" is in removing your paste wax marks.
