I have the Subaru version and I'm pretty sure I have to be moving for it to change. Not 100% sure though

Its not looking for a voltage from the speedo input? Being physically in the car/truck isn't really the question.
I have 2 different units (surf, prado) and I spent a little bit of time cleaning them up and painting them. The compass doesn't seem to move in either. I've got them hooked up to a 12V source.

Both of those look pretty neat!
I would imagine that the rig would need to be moving, as it would supply "accuracy" through redundancy. If you ever use maps on a smartphone, you'll notice the app/GPS often can't tell which way you're moving or even facing on the road, unless you're moving. Pinging multiple locations in a direction helps the app to decide if it is working.
I think a similar concept is at work here. Also, in some of these, there are bars that move when connected/tapped into the ABS sensor.
I have the Subuaru FMU/Gauge pack. Works great. Has to move for calibration (driving in circles).

I am pretty sure that testing requires you to run around in circles carrying the FMU and battery.
