yes if you overfill to much the transmission will build pressure and blow every seal in that thing out.
As far as mechanical damage not much damage can be done by over filling.

the manual transmission is really easy to get the right fluid amount in it you simply fill it till fluid leaks out of the check plug which is on the side of the transmission.
I would just pull the check plug and if a little fluid drips out then your good but if too much comes out then just let it drain till its a slow drip.

i totally understand why you did that but you can just quick pull the check plug and fill it from top till it drizels out the check plug.
it should be a 3 quart tranny so if you didnt put like 6 quarts in it you might be alright.
