Final Decision Time BFG M/T or A/T?

Ok what are some serious cons to mud tires?

I like the agressive look, I think I can get by with A/T but any trail down here will have alot of mud.

They cost almost the same

How much more use will I get out of A/T?

Does the BFG M/T become much less safe quicker than A/T when it comes to breaking and acceleation,

I honestly can't decide.

I like the looks of both. I do 90% highway but when it's time to go offroad, there's no such thing as dry in louisiana, it's usually ruts from
other vehicles and 4wheelers, and honestly if I don't get MANY more mikes from the A/T I might as well get the M/T.

Hmmmm
While I have had both sets of BFG's, I have not had the newer Mud Terrains.
The older style did not have the siping the newer ones have.
When I did have the mud tires, they worked pretty well in the rain here in Florida where the conditions are similar to Louisiana.

I would go with the mud terrains.

Of course. Ya know I'm really leaning towards the M.T. Only drawback I can think of is noise. And since ihave no carpet i already have a problem with road noise.

The AT's will definitely last longer and will get better milage. The MTs are heavier.

ATs will handle better in the rain, but even then I've heard some bad things about them.

Your set on BFG?

Yes, the A/T 's will be BETTER in the rain, wear a bit longer, are a bit quieter, they are not as good in the mud.

I currently have the A/T's on my T100 & 97 4runner. I had them on my 87 4runner, but sold them when I got the TSL's.
I had them on my 96 4Runner, 99 Sonoma, & 87 Grand Wagoneer. I never had an issue with them being bad in the rain. It rains a lot in Florida ( raining right now as I type )
When you have a fresh rain after a long dry spell, the oils on the road will make any tire slip. IMHO, the A/T's do an exceptionally good job keeping their grip.

I had the M/T's on an 87 Jeep J10 pickup. They also did a fine job in the rain, but they would have been better with the siping the new ones have now.
They were louder than the A/T's, but not nearly as much as you would have thought. They were hands down much better for off roading in the mud than the A/T's. They lasted a long time on the truck and quite a long time on it for the guy who bought the truck from me 7 or so years ago.

I have never had the BFG A/Ts but just some things that are pretty much a given regarding those tires... They last forever... like 80,000 miles forever. Problem is they aren't a very comfortable tire after a while because the compound get increasingly harder. It's good for wear, and bad for comfort. Since it doesn't seem your as concerned about comfort, I would consider this a pro. I have heard many stories online of them being a pretty shitty rain tire. My brother has had them on his Super Duty for about 3 years and will verify this. Obviously its not a 4Runner so maybe not hugely relative but I've heard many like stories on all different kinds of vehicle.

I do personally have the KM2s so I have some first hand experience, although they are my first set of M/Ts so it's not much of a comparison. 1st, they are amazing off road. I literally could not believe the things these tires were getting me through. They are great on almost any off road terrain, whereas some tires are excellent on rocks and suck on mud..etc. They have not disappointed me on road either. I have had mine in snow, rain, sleet, ice and they really didn't seem to do any worse than my all seasons that I had before. The wear hasn't exactly been exceptional so far, but again maybe because I'm not used to M/T wear. When they were first released BFG anticipated around 40k with good rotations. I've been religious with my rotations and have probably put 15k or so on mine so far and don't see them being of much use on or off road in another 25k but only time will tell for sure.

My thoughts dealing with these two sets of tires specifically is to go with the KM2s if the treadwear is not the biggest factor on your list. I went with them, knowing that I wouldn't get great tire life out of them but that I could afford to replace them when needed.
