Final Thoughts on Manual Swap

*Please note this is not a write up but more a summary of my experience.*

Wiring: I only had one real hiccup with the wiring which turned out to be an interesting one. After reading some threads, I figured out what wires needed to go where.
The basic rundown was this:
(pin 3 to pin 4) for clutch depress
(pin 10 to pin 5) for clutch release
(pin 10 to pin 7) for reverse switch

After performing the above wiring, this happened:

Turns out for the 2000, the clutch release and reverse switches were swapped around at the factory.

So for me, it was:
(pin 3 to pin 4) for clutch depress
(pin 10 to pin 7) for clutch release
(pin 10 to pin 5) for reverse switch

I soldered a couple wires, then grew impatient and started using these babies which I highly recommend. I don’t know what the right name for them is but I call them 'quick connects' and believe me, they are. No wiring stripping, no cursing.



Pedals: I tried keeping this project as low budget as I could. I bought a clutch pedal and decided to keep my original brake pedal. Please Note: Without modification of your brake pedal, it will simply be too close to the clutch pedal. I cut mine in half as shown here and bought one of these to cover up metal.





Driveshaft: I kept my original rear driveshaft by buying a $25 driveshaft spacer, it feels skookum and I approve of it. Front driveshaft was replaced with one from a M/T 1998 4Runner.

Interior: The only thing I did on the interior to make this work was cut out the middle section of the shifter holes depicted below



Transmission: As some of you already know, here’s where I ran into some other problems. I picked up an R150F that came out of a 2nd gen 4runner. I was dumb enough not to think about the fact that the 3.0 and 3.4 engines wouldn’t have the same bell housing pattern. I pulled my automatic and transfer case together, then took off the transfer case and tried mating it to the R150F. No dice, I almost cried. In the end it all worked out fine though, I found a 3rd gen R150F for $250 from a junkyard that only had 126k on it. Since I only paid $75 for the first tranny I might just keep it and tinker around with it. I’m super curious about its guts.
The first time I tried installing the manual, I just could not for the life of my get this damn thing to mate up close enough to install a bell housing bolt. After 25 minutes of shaking, pushing and pulling I tapped out and lowered it. I found an alignment pin still stuck in the manual tranny that it stole from its previous engine. Map gas with a pair of vice grips was the end of that problem. After that she went right on in.





Last little tiff came after the install. I opened up the drain plug to find this milking looking fluid. *Heart sinks* How could this happen to me? I just want a damn transmission that will work!!! After calling my buddy who works for a chevy dealership he assured me that a sitting transmission will do that when condensation in the fluid doesn't get hot and evaporate, you're left with that. Trusting him, I moved forward. I squirted a quart of gear oil as hard as I could do the shifter hole to flush out as much of the bad fluid as I could. Filled her then with 2.3 quarts of MT-90 and she shifts like a dream.

Was the only difference between the 3.0 R150F and the 3.4 R150F the bellhousing? Could you have just swapped in a 3.4 bellhousing? Just curious
 
That alignment pin was the reason you could not get the transmission mount to line up properly? Nice work on the swap, I had completely forgot I had changed out the brake pedal on mine. I am always amazed that some one can do the swap in a day, took me a week to do all those little things to get it running

Ok a couple things here:

1. The bell housing from the automatic doesn't fit well. You can tighten it down enough to get the started attatched like I did to see the engine turn (I posted a video on youtube about that), but when I took it off, there were scuff marks from where it was hitting the clutch cover.

2. So the bell housing was different but the transfer case wouldn't match up either so theres really two problems there.
 
That alignment pin was the reason you could not get the transmission mount to line up properly?

I still don't know why it was difficult to get that tranny mount lined up properly. All the bell housing bolts went up just fine so it's not like something got pinched, pushing out the transmission too far. It drives fine so I'm not worried about it. I'm just keeping an eye out for anything obvious
 
may i ask, how does it feel going into 1st, then from 1st to 2nd? does it sometimes feels a little weird as if the gears are not lined up ?

also, what about going into reverse? i notice if im in neutral and push the clutch pedal down quickly shift into reverse it sounds like the gears are grinding a little. But if push on the clutch and wait a few seconds then go into reverse it goes in smoothly!

I've only been driving it for a week or so, so give me another week to respond to this. So far though, I haven't noticed anything but this weekend I'm going to be doing a bit of wheeling so I'll be paying real good attention to the tranny.
 
Going into 5th is not always seamless for me. Going into 2nd might be a hair less than seamless as well.
In Toyotas- I've always waited till I'm stopped to pull out of the forward fear before shifting into reverse. This eliminates the infamous Toyota reverse grind. I drove my buddy's SAS'd Ranger for a week, and reverse had a synchro- meaning you could put it into reverse while still slowly moving forward! It was super nice.

Let me put it this way, I pull up to the guys house where his 2nd gen 4runner was in the garage with a 350 chevy motor in it. The "r150f" was sitting on the floor and he said everything about it worked fine, he took it off the 3.0 because it had a head gasket failure (which is very very common on those motors) so right away I was like ok he isn't bull shitting me. That transmission, which I still have, absolutely without question will not mate up to my 3.4 or transfer case. Now with that being said, is it really a r150f? That I can't prove. I only know what I've been told.

Yeah. Took me and my friend 4 hours lol.

I have a from the factory 5 speed and that's how shifting into reverse is for me at times.

Yeah I heard the same thing. That toyota don't have syncros on reverse. So much for rocking back ad forth when stuck lol.

Many/most manual transmissions are this way.

When the clutch pedal is up, the engine is driving the input shaft of the trans. It'll keep spinning for a bit after you push in the clutch. With no synchros on reverse, there is nothing to slow the input shaft for the gears to mesh as they are engaging.

If you need to go into reverse faster than that, hit another gear (not 5th!) after the clutch pedal is pressed before going into reverse. That action stops the inputs shaft from spinning and will allow you to go straight into reverse with no grinding. Or, just manhandle it, like you have to with the H to L transition on the transfer case to keep it from grinding... :p

Just wanted to let you- and mostly future searchees- know the 3.0 trans bolts up to the 3.4 without an issue. I'm only 1 of 100's of guys that have done it.

Did you get a new clutch kit to use for your manual swap?
 
I've always called those quick connectors T taps.

My Supra grinds into reverse a little also if I rush it. I'm not sure what fluid you put in, but Redline is magical stuff. I highly recommend it. Usually when I go for reverse I hold it to the right for a few seconds and then pull it straight down into reverse, or put it into 4th for a second and then put it into reverse and that seems to smooth it out. It grinds because we have no reverse synchros as someone else said.
 
I'm betting you got a clutch kit for a 3.4, and that's why your 3.0 R150 wouldn't bolt up- you have to use the T/O bearing that corresponds to that bellhousing/trans. You can't use a 3.4 T/O bearing with the 3.0 trans from a 2nd gen 4Runner.
You can use either clutch/pressure plate, but the T/O bearing is specific to each trans.
It helps to do your research. Plenty of info on this out here in interwebs land.

Thanks, man! I ordered an Aisin kit that came with everything I needed. Pilot bearing, throw out bearing, flywheel, and clutch. I didn't trust anything I was seeing on ebay (even though some guys on here swear by it) so I decided to go with OEM stuff.

I got my clutch from autozone. It's EXEDY and said right on it. Made in Japan for like $150

Flywheel... used on eBay for $40
 
Just got my Gen3 swap 3.4 auto to R150

I am curious as my spedo still seems to register even though nothing is connected to the new manual 5 speed . Also any ideas on swapping in a manual ECU and wire harness ... would I need to have the VIN and odometer reading updated to natch the old automatic ECU.
