I am so excited to have placed my order for a bullbar from Shrockworks.

It has awesome approach angles and is built tough. Can't wait for the production to get underway.

Some pictures of the bar made for other SUV's...looks hot!

The look of the bar is really growing on me . . . . too bad they are so expensive, but I guess I can start saving now :)

good lord you could invade some small countries with a bar like that...

That is the whole point :D

This is a real bullbar, made to carry a winch and protect the front end from animals, rocks, small cars, etc. While improving the approach angle.

A side benefit is that you get cutoff far less in traffic :D

It may be worth noting there are quite a few options in the design such as ordering without the hoops. Shrockworks are working hard to make a product that will surpass your expectations in build and responding to customer wishes. This is the great thing about this company.... they are listening to the people.

Note: I am not associated with Shrockworks other than being a very excited customer who is looking for an outstanding product.

LOL - I could care less ;):

I think I am getting a better product anyhow. ARB have been really disappointing but I understand their position nevertheless. They do make great products but this Shrockworks bar looks killer!:D I can't sleep thinking about how great it will be.:biggrin2:

i may have missed it but what is the price range?

Mark left the links with all the info up somewhere in the thread, but basically the estimate is $750-$1000 at the moment. The Xterra ones are around $750 including the hoops and the front skid plate portion to cover the radiator. If you order it without hoops, without powder coating, etc it will be even cheaper.

The final price will only be out once the prototype is finished. Their prices are very fair on the other products they offer so I am very optimistic that the bumper will not be expensive for what you get. Considering little nudge bars cost $400+ this bumper is a bargain.

The winch mount is part of the bumper. The final price has not been established yet, but go to Shrockworks site and see the pricign and options on the Xterra bumpers. That is pretty much what we are looking at for the 4R.

Andries:

When you get these bumpers built here's some recommendations since I've gone thru 2 bumpers now:

1. Reinforce the mount by using the side holes and run it all the way atleast 6-9 inches back. You will find 1 set of bolts that are right next to the front frame ends and another set about 6" beyond that. Utilize both as this will ensure that the bumper is secure (good for winching as the front frame butt ends are not strong enough.)

2. Winch location should sit as low as possible (the higher it sits up the more stress the bumper mounts will have to take on).

3. Shackle hangers should ideally sit right at the frame ends as that is the strongest point of reference. Anything higher and you risk the same problem as the winch.

4. Give at least a good 1" spacing between the bumper and the body panels as the front will flex and you don't want the bumper to eat your body panels/headlights etc.

5. Watch out for the A/C and the Power steering lines for the v8 and possibly the v6 engines as it sits very low to the driver side. There is a bracket to the outer side of the frame that you can unbolt. You will most likely have to remove that mount and bend it up as you will want to protect it w/ the bumper.

6. Make the front plate go down to the subframe right under the radiator. This way it protects the front of the radiator. The bottom of the radiator has a subframe that protects the radiator (new feature for the 4runner as the previous gen does not have this) and also doubles for the mount for the skid. I am currently developing a skid for the 4runner and will be using the same reference holes so if you can make sure it doesn't cover it up that would be greatly appreciated.

7. Keep the weight down to a minimum if possible as you don't want to incur too much additional weight compared to the stock bumper (unavoidable but then again you don't want a brick either). Factor in the winch as an additional 75-100# depending on configuration.

That's about it! :) Good luck and go get em! Looks like it'll be a very sweet bumper!

I like how the lines of the grille on the X-terra are incorporated into the bumper. Nice touch. Hope something similar will be seen in the 4R bumper.

Lance, thx for the input.

We have been discussing a number of these topics, and as always a number of tradeoffs will have to be made.

The guys at SW seems like an experienced bunch with this type of bumper, and the feedback from the Xterra crowd was excellent. I specifically requested feedback about the use of the bumpers for winching and recovery and they have had nada problems.

The one thing that is certain is that the frame end mounting locations are way to wimpy for a winch bumper and the use of the main frame rails will have to be incorporated. Fortunately the 4R has a couple of good frame rail mounting points that can be used. However location of winch will be improtant keeping approach angle in mind. I just wish Toyota did a few things differently, especially with the A/C tube running so far in front of the rad assembly. Also I would definitely like to see recovery points on the front of the bumper, as it will make it much easier to use.

First things first, get the prototype started. :D

Re: Not a Bull Bar

It's not a Bull Bar, it's a replacement bumper.

Well where I come from bullbar is actually a term used for a bumper/bar put on a vehicle to withstand very large animal strikes an still allow the vehicle to keep going. Actually the term came from large trucks that was used to transport goods to remote areas where hitting animals on these dirt roads was a big problem, thus the trucks where fitted with very large steel bumpers to take the animal (normally cattle) strike and still drive with no issues. This is not used as much anymore in South Afirca/Namibia/Botswana, etc as the roads have improved quite a bit. I believe it is still a big deal in Oz with the "road trains".

This obviously caught on with people driving pickups and 4x4s on these roads. Saved a lot of folks from very bad situations. Even in the US it is very usefull for areas with deer.

Apart from that function it al most people fit it for a winch mount and to improve the approach angle as well as durability of the front end. The hoops are not done on a lot of bumpers here as animal hits are not such a problem.
