After 148k with my V6 Sport I finally decided to drive an 8. WOW, between the 8 and standard suspension what a difference from my rig.

Now I know why I didn't test drive the 8 about 7 years ago!

Care to elaborate? I'm trying to decide between the V6 and the V8 right now. Was the V8 you drove a sport? Or was it an SR5 or Limited without the XREAS?

haha! I was going to refer you to THIS thread!!

Dang, I think if only Toyota offered a 4runner with the 5.7 V8 engine, people would probably flock right over it!

And I would not buy a used car I can't see and test drive, regardless of whether it is whoever certified.

Bought my 04 V6 without ever driving the 8 as I knew I would love it. I now occasionally tow a 2000-3000 lb trailer and the V6 really works sometimes. With almost 150k on it I feel it is in very good shape but I get worried when pulling the trailer.

The V8 power was noticeable the first second I stepped on the gas. The one I drove was an SR5 with 90k. Popped the hood with the engine running and it was like butter, just smooth.

Next the suspension. Lots of love and hate here on the XREAS. Since that is all I ever knew I was firmly in one camp. Driving the SR5 certainly gave me more of a road feel something I now think the XREAS tends to mask.

6 or 8 depends on what you need or want. The 6 has been outstanding for me til the trailer came into play.

Honestly a 3UR-FE (5.7L) would be an awesome addition to the 4Runner if not overkill, a 1UR-FE (4.6L) Would be perfect for the new 4Runners. My only complaint with these two engines is that unlike the 2UZ-FE (4.7L) they were designed with Cast Aluminum engine blocks, which makes me wary in a vehicle like a truck or SUV. But that is my opinion.

And I love my '04 SE V8 4WD

Cast iron blocks are becoming a thing of the past on all manufactuers engines, even some diesels. Corvettes with over 600 hp stock have aluminum blocks.

Luuuuuke I am your Father, welcome to the darkside of the V8's DarthVaderMask-thumb-550x324-29078.jpg

I realize that, the only concern I have is that when these blocks get overheated, worn, or pretty in any way used they need to be replaced. Most of Toyota's steel liners cannot be removed from the block itself. A lot of newer engines use coatings on these liners to further increase performance and so on that cannot be reused.

I think the Aluminum blocks are a great advance in weight reduction and such, but the draw back seems to be the loss of serviceability should there be any real problems. Most of these aluminum blocks need to be replaced should something happen.

100% agree… I my case I did test drove V8 and V6 and that is how I ended up with 8... LOL.
It was impossible not to see the differences.

V8+

I thought I'd chime in with props to the v8 as well.

To get it to really open up, one has to add T4R.ORG Bling...

...Actually adds 50 RWHP....
