Sorry it took so long to get back with you. I have been out of town. The workmanship is actually really good. The total bill came out to be $13,500 and every panel plus the hood and roof were replaced. I had heard horror stories about once the roof is removed that the car is never the same and there will be air and water leaks. However, it sounds just as quiet as before and the paint job is now guaranteed for life. I guess I will see how it holds up over time.
I don't have any of the post repair pictures yet because my wife has it in Colorado and she won't be back until next week. To answer the questions (in case the pictures didn't give away the damage): It was a large hail storm that lasted for about 20 minutes. The hail in my hand was after the large ones had sat on the ground for 10 minutes. My wife was driving and I told her to pull over immeaditly. I wonder if I should have driven through the storm and maybe there would have been less damage? I was shocked when State Farm would not total the vehicle out and wanted to repair instead. I think if I would have had a vehicle that had depriciated faster then I would have had a better case but the 4runner was still worth over $25K and they need closer to 20K in damage to get a totalled vehicle. I have thought about selling but it seems to run fine and I can't find as good a deal on a new 4runner now. We will see.
We had a hail storm alot like that roll through Golden and Lakewood one spring a couple years back. Totaled everything in its path, including a Ford and Toyota/Scion Dealership. I heard there was over $10 million in damage at the Toyota/Scion megaplex. Saw pictures of a Hummer stuck in a parking lot trying to drive around a storm drain clogged with golfball sized hail. The storm also left the local golf course littered with debris, and the greens didn't recover until the following summer. Pretty much every car in its path looked like yours. The funny thing was the storm only lasted about half an hour. Sorry, no pics.
Actually, I lived in Littleton, CO at the time of that last hail storm a few years back but we were out of town when it occured. I remember coming back to Littleton and all the branches on the trees were destroyed. Also, the car dealers had hail sales for months and I thought about buying one at the time but the damage was too extensive. The whole front range from cheyanne to albuquerque seems pretty suceptible to hail storms in the spring.
