Finally got my 4runner up and running

Well after several setbacks and well spent money, I finally got my 4runner up and running. Bought her awhile back with a blown engine. It took me several months to find an engine I could afford, and someone stealing my cat while waiting to install engine.
(hope Karma gets them back for that one)!

I was a little disapointed when I failed state inspection with a P0172 engine code but was able to track down the problem with all the information posted on this site (Thank You Everyone). Turned out to be a dirty MAF sensor.

List of stuff or money spent!
1. engine from 2002 4runner $675.00---craigslist
2. tires BFgoodrich longtrail (5 tires new) $500-----craigslist
3. Magnflow Direct Fit Cat $400 ------autozone
4. belts, hoses, brakes, rotors, battery, gaskets, NGK spark plugs and NGK spark plug wires ------ok dont feel like adding all that up!
5. ash tray----missing from SUV----ebay $35---another one of those things that annoyed me!

Now I need to trackdown the following:
1. Cruise control will not work.
2. Back gate Rear hatch window will only go down about a 1/2 inch
3. clock display not working.......I know not a big deal but it annoys me!
So far found this link for clock!!!

This forum is a wealth of knowlege and I thank everyone for posting and helping me get my 4runner up and running!

I have not read any of your other threads, so forgive me if you already have been informed of this.

There are 2 plugs that your clock wiring harness fit into. 1 is for the clock, one is just a dummy, and does nothing but accept the harness for some reason.

Is yours plugged into the correct one?

Yay another Austin Runner! :bigok: Theres not nearly enough of us on here. Its mostly southern Cali, and Colorado, lol.
Did they steal your cat here in Austin? I didn't know that was going on here...
Great looking truck; Welcome man! :welcome:

4Runner

$700 for an engine! that is great. any problems?

No problems at all...The engine runs great and had only 110,000 miles on it. I spoke a little to soon about my P0172 code because it's back! So now I'm guessing it could either be a bad MAF sensor or O2 sensor (maybe the one before the cat). It hesitates a bit when stopped at a light and trying to take off.
Amazon has one hell of a price on Denso O2 sensor http://www.amazon.com/Denso-234-416...otive&Make=Toyota|76&Year=1999|1999&carId=001

As for my cruise control issue, it may be the fact that my cable is missing. I can't even find where it is suppose to get hooked up to on air cleaner side. Here is a pick I found of a motor with what I'm guessing is cruise control cable.

Played with clock for a bit today and got it working for a few minutes then it stopped working again. I'll try again later when I have more time.
Also notice that stock metra stereo adaptor will not work. 4runner came with 3 disk CD changer, cassette, stereo. So I'm only guessing that's why connectors didn't fit. Might have to bite it and order one from crutchfield.

Didn't even come close to looking at rear window with working on girlfriends car and yard work....Maybe next weekend.........

P0172 check engine code

Ok so found my cruise control cable tucked in the fender. Works perfectly now, but I'm still getting the P0172 check engine code and it's driving me crazy!
So far I've
1. Cleaned MAF sensor
2. Replaced upstream O2 sensor with new Denso
3. Checked all vacuum lines for leaks.
4. New CAT-since someone was nice enough to steal mine. All gaskets replaced.

Symptoms
1. Intermitten rough/surging engine starts for maybe 10 to 20 seconds
2. poor gas mileage
3. I've heard on more then one occasion a backfire from engine bay when accelerating.

Might be way off in left field but could it be a bad TPS sensor or bad MAF sensor?
Searched other post and seems like it could be a few other things besides parts mentioned. Maybe I should just take it in the the stealership......

I had similar symptoms and it replacing the TPS sensor and cleaning the MAF got rid of it. Search for p0172 and you'll find a couple threads on it, I wouldn't start replacing parts without running it through a scanner.

So far my code scanner only shows the P0172 code. Sounds like I might be on the right track with the TPS sensor.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post

Rear Gate window

Ok so I finally got my rear gate window working.

Problem: Would only roll down about 2 inches then stop
Solution: Rear window was actually hitting rear wiper motor when cycling down. Reseated motor and window now rolls down without any issue.

Still dealing with P0172 engine code. Think I'm just going to take it in to get checked. Just too many variables costing 50 bucks or more.....

P0172 check engine code

Ok so I finally took my Runner to the Stealership for P0172 CEL.
$390 for a new Mass Airflow Meter. So far she is running great and hopefully that will take care of the problem.......
