I finally took delivery of my Salsa red V8 Limited on Friday. The retail price was almost 44K, I paid 39 and change. The stealer tried to say the rebate was part of the price, I was ready to walk. I knew he wouldn’t let me go. They had a leftover with the same options on the showroom floor that they were giving 6K off. I also picked up the Toyota extended warrantee (7 year/100K miles) for $1000.
As soon as the weather breaks I will post some pics. I put 200 miles the first day. What a truck! The first things I noticed were the power, smoothness, and quietness. This is a truck that feels and rides like a luxury car. It goes over bumps like no other vehicle I’ve ever driven. At first all the bells and whistles were a little overwhelming, so I concentrated on just getting used to driving the new vehicle. The accelerator and brake pedals are very sensitive/responsive; it took a couple hours to get used to. You just rest your foot on the brake and you’re braking pretty hard, nice. The truck came with the black wall Bridgestone tires which seem to grip pretty well. It snowed Sat. night, just a dusting but enough to cover the road Sun. morning. It was very hard to break the tires even on the snow. I averaged 15mpg for the first 200 miles. Not great but who cares.
The seating is very comfortable after using the many adjusters. The heated seats are new for me and I found them to feel nice. I spent some time setting all the gadgets up like; homelink, nav., radio stations, etc. The nav. is sweet, especially with the back-up camera, but it will take some time/usage to know all its functions. The voice and chime alerts work great. I already set-up the maintenance schedule, and programmed some stuff into the calendar. The radio is very different from the non nav. HU. The adjustability of the sound is great. I was able to set-up the sound just the way I like it. I don’t see any reason to make any changes to the system. There is even the option for different users.
The drive train is one of the smoothest I’ve ever driven. It almost feels electric. The low range and center locking diff. work great. I did notice the low range didn’t engage when I turned the dial (in neutral or park), it just beeped. I then engaged the center diff. lock and then the low range would engage. I disengaged the center diff. and the low range would engage with no problem.
I love the gated gear selector and the indicator on the dash. The rear air suspension is really cool. Will come in handy with some of the flooding in my area and the mild off roading I do. The main reason I wanted it was for trailering my motorcycle. It’s really cool when you stop, get out and the truck lowers so you can load it easier. I haven’t driven a non-xreas equipped runner to compare but the truck has very little body role at highway speed, handles incredible for a truck.
I was surprised at all the little details Toyota incorporated into the interior design. The way the garbage bag holder uses grocery bags, the built in tissue box in the center consol, all the cup and bottle holders, the bag hooks and tie downs in the back, all the interior lighting and the way it fades out, the homelink and storage compartments, the two tier glove box, the extensions on the front and rear arm rests, the rear heat/AC vents, the rear audio, wireless controls and headphones, etc. The dual climate control is heaven sent. The dash lights are really cool with the little red dot on the gauges that you can see even in the brightest daylight.
The first things I plan on installing are the remote oil filter and bypass (at the first oil change 1K miles) and switch to synthetic oil, bumper guards front and rear, the protective film for the head lights and Silverstar bulbs (which I already have).
All I can say is “This is one sweet truck”. Can’t wait till I can get it to the Lion’s Back!
