Got tired of the shudder from time to time, and about to tow an enclosed motorcycle trailer from Reno to Buttonwillow CA. Finally doing the Tundra 231mm brake upgrade.

Total parts from Autozone = Total $347.61 after I return the caliper cores.

Parts List "for your 2003 Toyota Truck Tundra 4WD 4.7L EFI DOHC 8cyl" :biggrin2:

2 Duralast Reman/Brake Caliper - Front
Part Number: C9950 Passenger side C9951 Driver side
Price $76.99 + $40 Core = $116.99 x2 Warranty: Limited Lifetime

1 Duralast Gold Cmax Front Brake Pads ultra quiet premium ceramic
Part Number: DGC976 (includes hardware kit)
Price $54.99 for full front set. Warranty: Limited Lifetime

2 Duralast/Brake Rotor - Front Part Number: 31267

+ est. $95 install and brake bleed. Would have done it myself but sort of needed them done ASAP and I’m not the best at bleeding brakes on the T4R + a buddy managers a local garage and going there I can trust the work.

Sick my man!! I didn't know you rode? I may have to get this brake upgrade as well. Which Autozone did you go to? North or South end of town?

Would you also mind PMing me the Shop's info? I probably will end up doing this upgrade once summer comes .

Good stuff, I'd always heard to order for a 2006, so I thought I'd make sure you had what you wanted.:biggrin2:

Make sure to update with your impressions when you get back!

Sure do. Getting the track/race bike painted this week and then off to Buttonwillow in a few to test it out and keep the skills going until we get to riding season around here. Can't wait. Sending you a PM with details on the shop.

I saw in a thread that the 233mm 13WL upgrade for the Tundra's was 2002.5. The Auto Zone site seemed to confirm it when I looked at 2002.5 so I went to 2003. Sure enough its the only ones for that year.

Just picked it up. All I can say is WHOA! great improvement. The shop did a good job and also adjusted my rear brakes which apparently needed it. Much better stopping soon as I get on the pedal. No mushy feeling and no delay to begin the stopping.

I had had the brakes blead once already. Then the brake booster went out. Got that fixed and thought between those it should brake better. Nope. Now... Yes it brakes better!! :hatsoff: I went from a 1998 T4R limited to a BMW X5 and now back to this 2000 T4R. So by comparison: I never really noticed poor braking on the 1998. It seemed fine but not great. The X5 obviously had great brakes. Then going to the 2000 I was concerned about the lack of braking power. Even had a few close calls towing the bike when I had to almost stand on them. Never confident with a trailer for a long trip. No concerns now.

Now when I hit the brakes it begins to stop and keeps shedding speed quickly. I'm not stomping on them b/c I want to bed them in right. Seems every mfg has a slightly different proceedure: Brake Tech - Brake Pad and Rotor Bed-In Procedures but that said they all seem to say moderate braking and some hard-on the brakes then go for a bit to cool them. No emergency stopping and try not to come to a stop whith the full hot. [give or take that's what I get out of it...]

Oh, pricing note. With the modification the shop time was a bit more. About $200 or so. Still not bad for having it done right.

As soon as the weather gets somewhat warm, I'll be doing this. 4ganger, thanks a ton for posting up the info and your experience.

:thanks:

Good info on the Brakes 4ganger. Im looking to do this to mine this summer. Definetly will be looking at this thread for a parts list. Thanks.

Thank you for sharing the details and success of your upgrade. I'm looking forward to doing this one myself.

I'll purchase new rotors, but I'll likely get used calipers from a salvage yard if I find the right deal and condition. While I'm at it, should I grab the rotor dust shields off of a Tundra? I know I can cut the existing, but I was thinking it would make for a cleaner install and a used one shouldn't be all that much. Anyone try this?

Two things...

I called a local salvage. The used calipers were $50 ea. new was only $75. At that price I'll buy new.

From what i understand if you change the dust shield you would have to pull the hub & the repack the bearings. Seems like a lot of work for no real gain.

So, were the stock dust shields okay to leave on or did they have to be cut? I guess I'll have to check the threads for that info as well. Also did you have to get different/upgraded brake lines?

Well for that price, I'd be a fool for purchasing used. Curious, is this the price for a reman OEM caliper? I had a bad experience with a non-OEM reman caliper once on a Subaru Impreza, so I'm hesitant to use non-OEM parts. Excellent point on the dust shield, definitely not worth the effort. Many thanks.
