After having a camaro for several years, i just couldn't stand how quiet the 4runner was. I finally got around to putting on a flowmaster 50 'SUV' series muffler. At the same time, I had the shop remove the resonator and turn the pipe out the side. Ahhhh.... it is music to my ears. One of my neighbors came over and said "wow... now it sounds like you actually have a V8 in that thing". I laughed and told him it's been a V8 all along...
Anyway - to all those looking to upgrade:
From outside the cabin: Not really a lot louder, but wayyy deeper and loud enough (in my opinion). I really expected it to be louder, but I'm glad it isn't.
From inside the cabin: No longer sounds like a jet taking off. I forgot (until now) that I had a 5 speed. The gear changes become more obvious. You know the exhaust is there when accelerating. Once you are at cruising speed (city), it might be about 5-10% louder than factory muffler. At highway cruising speeds (60-75), the sound is there.... maybe 40-50% louder than factory. It doesn't drone, just simply is louder. Above 75, it starts to quiet down again. At 120, it seems to.... just kidding....
At all stages, it is a deep, mellow sound
Before you ask, I don't ever see me being able to make a soundclip. However, I did some lengthy examinations of the clips on the flowmaster website.

The following closely resemble the sound from my t4r:
Interior: "40 Series Delta Flow" sound clip, only slightly quieter
Exterior: "50 Series SUV" almost perfect match.
Remember, this isn't a catback system... just replaced the muffler and turned the pipe out the side (and removed the resonator).
Overall - I Love it. Muffler was $90 shipped and the install labor was $70. Scottsdale Muffler did a great job!
