Finally here: my 2016 SuperWhite 'TRD Trail' w/KDSS

Sounds like you made out!

By the way, I assume your new truck is perfectly level? ;)

It's a lot closer. :D

I was absolutely blown away by how different the KDSS and standard suspension rides. The standard is so much softer and more comfortable it's amazing. I don't even want to lift it anymore because it's like riding on a cloud.

Regarding the KDSS lean issue, several people have PM'd me with questions about it, so thought I should document the relatively successful fix here.

Measuring fender heights at the center of the axle on level ground, as delivered my 'TRD Trail' measured:
  • 1.5" high on the front-left
  • 1.2" high on the rear-left
That is far beyond Toyota's KDSS calibration limit of 0.787 inches, and it was visually obvious looking at the vehicle (see first image of delivery, and the second of the rear of it sitting in the garage). The service tech performed the KDSS lean calibration after noticing the lean, but it really did nothing.

That same day I walked out on the lot and measured all three stock KDSS vehicles they had on the lot, and they all measured about 3/4" high on the left-front, and about 1/2" high on the left-rear; this is an odd feature (or bug) of the KDSS system, that it, in and of itself, reverses the lean compared to non-KDSS vehicles.

Anyway, after a lot of research here on left/right leans with KDSS/non-KDSS vehicles (i.e. KDSS vehicles tend to be high on the left, non-KDSS vehicles tend to be a bit high on the right), I decided that the TRD Pro shocks being asymmetric must be exacerbating the 'normal' KDSS lean (i.e. the left shock is pre-loaded by 1/2" to supposedly compensate for the 'normal' 4Runner's left lean due to fuel/driver weight).

I thus requested the dealer swap the L-R shocks on their nickel, and accepted the responsibility if it didn't fix the problem (i.e. it was the dealer's last attempt to fix it, being that the TRD Pro suspension is not recommended for the Trail with KDSS). Fortunately for me, it has leveled the vehicle to near specs (roughly), and it now leans to the other side, but it is now not visually noticeable:
  • 0.9" high on the front-right
  • 0.6" high on the rear-right
Now, when approaching my vehicle from virtually any angle, I do not notice it leaning, so despite it being near the max tolerance in the front-right, it's close enough for me (and I'm the guy who straightens pictures in the house all the time).

For those of you who noticed the rather large change that simply switching the shocks in the front made, I'm as puzzled as anyone that it effectively changed the lean nearly twice what I expected, i.e. a net change of 2.4" in the front and 1.8" inches in the rear, especially given the fact that no changes were made to the rear whatsoever (the TRD rear shocks are identical). The OEM shocks that were removed, both front and rear, are identical to each other.

After this endeavor, it's my belief that the KDSS system somehow levels itself front-to-rear, based upon some initial (pressure?) set point that it seems to 'like', the calibrating of which seems to make little difference. The system effectively 'knew' that the front had become higher on the right, and self-adjusted the rear to also be high on the right. I suppose considering what the system is supposed to do for high-speed driving, it makes sense that it would do this, despite me not being able to technically explain it.

If anyone were to do this again, I'd suggest either:
  • Switching left and right shocks from the get-go; or
  • Buying two right shocks (no change in the stock perch setting), which I believe would nearly level the vehicle perfectly. Being that the only reasonable way to have TRD Pro suspension is to buy the $1700 front-rear kit, this probably isn't an option for anyone unless they buy the front and rear shocks separately, which would be prohibitively expensive; or
  • Last option would be to move the perch setting on the left shock to be equal to the right, though not sure how difficult this would be.

Hope this helps someone who may go down the 'TRD Trail' road in the future.

Quick update to the KDSS+TRD Pro shocks leveling issue:

So 6+ months and 4000 miles in, the front-right still sits 0.9" high, and the rear is now exactly level (no idea why it's level now when it wasn't before). I think I'm going to pay the local 4WD shop to push the perch setting on the lower shock (left side) up to the higher setting, thus making them even. I guess I could lower the right, but I might as well get a bit more lift out of it, and it should put the running board perfectly level front-to-rear.

Actually decided to go about it a different way, and picked up ToyTec's spring seats for the TRD suspension, in addition to 1/4" top spacers as needed for leveling, as well as T-13 1.5" coils for the rear (getting installed tomorrow). Should hopefully result in a 2.5" lift in front, 1.5" in rear, leaving a touch of rake for towing, but not the massive open wheel wells the ToyTec 3" TRD Pro kit gives with anything but 285s.

Here she is as it sits today, with the Rola rack and low-profile mount (flipped, which works out very well). Also went from 265s to 275s (Cooper AT3, LR C). And for what it's worth, the 275s rub slightly at full lock with the TRD wheels. Had the vehicle had the port TSB done (as on factory TRD Pros), I'm sure it wouldn't rub...

Nice Looking Rig. Pretty much going the same route. So far front/back bumper and roof racks painted black, 275/70/17 K02s, and TRD PRO grill swap. Next on the list are Bilstein 5100s and skid plate. Definitely love the day night difference between non kdss and kdss ride quality, specially on pavement. Good Luck and keep us posted please.

The guys who removed and re-installed the roof rack were not careful and did not tape the side up before before popping the roof rack covers off, and left it all messed up. Pretty amateur move by them but it was fixed later on by them.

Another thing they did was that they turned the roof rack rails a complete 180 degrees when hey installed them back after paint.

Something like this

This created an annoying loud and noticeable wind noise from the top while driving over about 40 mph. Even thought he roof rail holder is only slightly different if correctly or otherwise installed, but it does change the wind deflection angle enough to create this annoying noise (at least in my experience).

That is an easy fix. It's is only 8 bolts to remove the roof rack and correct the issue. Annoying they didn't do it right though.

Yes it was an easy fix. No bolts to remove. The cover pops out and roof rails slide out. More annoying were the scratches when they took off the covers to paint the rack and rails and did not use painters tape or something like that's before using whatever tool they used to dislodge the rail covers.

I wish I felt the same way as you about my KDSS ride quality. I know it handles corners better but I feel every single little bump and it feels like it's constantly shaking, bump bump bump. I also have the 275 K02s and have personally balanced and road forced them several times to see if that was related. I've also played around with the tire pressures and that has helped a little but not really that much. Right now I have them at 36 PSI and it still a super bumpy ride. I wish I knew what the deal was...
I'm not sure if it's the tires, the KDSS, or a combination of both…

It's the KDSS.

On my '14 w/KDSS I ran OEM Dunlops, Coopers, Nittos, Michelins, and BFG KO2s.

On my '14 w/out KDSS I've run OEM Dunlops, and BFG KO2s.

The KDSS truck rode rougher with P-metric Michelins at 32psi than the non-KDSS truck rides with C-load KO2s at 42psi.

Running 15+mph on gravel forest service roads was horrible in the KDSS truck.

Aurora over Colorado 5/28/17

Went up to Loveland Pass last night to try to catch the aurora borealis. It was there, but unfortunately didn't flared up in the 2 hours we were out. It was a brisk 21 degrees at 11,990', with wind and some drifting snow.

Will summer ever come?

Rotopax 2x 2-gal installed on Rola Vertex

In preparation for a last-minute White Rim trip with my son, I had to scramble around to figure out the best solution to carry extra fuel. I liked the Rotopax approach, and since they had a coupon for 'Buy 2-gal fuel, get 2-gal water FREE', I went that route. Overall happy with the product, but wish their website made it more clear that you had to buy an additional 'backer' plate, in addition to the (DLX) handle-type mount. Kind of silly, as it seems nearly everyone would need some sort of back plate.

Anyway, the Rola Vertex being a sort of non-standard rack required that I get creative, especially since I didn't have the correct backer plate. I found some steel strips with holes in it in the hardware store, and luckily the holes lined up... for the two main handle bolts, but not for the four actual installation bolts. The spacing of the Rola's bars were also a bit wide, with only about 1/2-inch of contact (more like 1" in the width of the actual contact on bar). Due to this, I decided to add some stick-on rubber to try and keep the round mount from slipping off the bar, and also installed the stuff on the steel strip.

Anyway, just got back from the White Rim, and nothing moved, so the install was a success, despite the hack-job nature of the bottom side of the install:

Awesome. My TRD Pro suspension was delivered yesterday. I ordered it online from Olathe Toyota (Toyota Parts Online | Olathe Toyota Parts Center) for $1,529.15. It did not come with instructions, so I called and asked if they had any. They did and promptly emailed me the PDF. Hopefully I'll have my local shop, Virginia Solar Tinting (tint, car window tinting, window tinting in richmond va, tinting, richmond tint companies, tint companies - richmond, va) install the lift within the week. Thank you for all of the information!

Do you have that PDF you could send my way?

Roof Rail blackout

Had my roof rails blacked out, as it should have come from the factory. Vinyl wrap, satin black. Couldn't stand looking at the silver rails with the black rack any longer...

Based on my experience, it is your tires. I have a 2017 TRD OR with KDSS. I drove 6K miles with stock tires and the ride comfort was great. I traded out for 275 BFG KO2 and it is a huge difference. I feel every bump or irregularity in the road. The tires are rated for a much heavier truck. I knew this going in and wanted that tire, so I tolerate it.
