Finally: My rear bumper build

I finally decided to commit to making a bumper. I tossed around a lot of ideas on what I was going to actually do. Fist it was plate, then buy one, then I decided to quit my job and focus on school, then it was a tube design.

I chose plate on my way to pattons steel yard early saturday morning. I bought:
3x3 .120 wall
2'x4' 1/8" plate
1' of receiver tube

My total spent on the build was $80 now on to the fun stuff




I did not take many build pictures because I was busy building it.... I did it alone
It took about 5 hours to get the main design finished:

any ways I got up on Sunday and got back to work on finishing the sides. I boxed the sides and added some extra supports. It turned out really stout. The legs that attach the sides are 1.5" .120 wall dom its all i had laying around. I also finished the receiver.

here it is all painted and waiting on me to finish the frame mounts:

and here is the finished product. NO TIRE RUBBING EVEN AT FULL STUFF

LOOKING GOOD IF YOU ASK ME... Im really happy with it. the welds all turned out good for using a stick welder. Im proud

I was going for a simple design. I thought i may be too boxy, but i love how it turned out. I gained so much clearance too. i think the sides are about 5" higher than stock. the main beam is 2" higher and about 3" more inwards

I must say that I don't like all the stuff you guys build yourself because it just shows that there's no way I could make anything close to it. That's a super nice and clean rear bumper!

Think that is one of my favorite rear bumpers, mainly bc it's simple and so light. Only 50 lbs. Awesome job. Looks great too.
Does the body rub it at all when flexing? Do you think you could actually tow with it. Saw the trailer hitch but don't know how much weight you can tow with only those 2 welds to the frame... Just thinking out loud.

Is there a frame mount in the middle behind the receiver or are there only the two on the side? Not bad for an afternoon of work! :thumb3:

It looks to be supported in the middle.

Thanks for all the comments the simple design sure helped keep the weight down

I made some plates that come off the frame and then i boxed it in with the angled piece you can see. so it has the two side legs and then each frame rail. It does not rub the body at all when flexing. and it seems super sturdy. I can jump up and down on it and it doesnt move at all. Its easy to make it sturdy when its welded on. the hard thing is try to make a bolt on that is sturdy.

Driffter I copied a few things off your bumper, hope you dont mind thanks for inspiration. the 3x3 tubing is perfect for a hitch and to keep as much ground clearance as possible

and Hepar, You CAN make something nice just take your time. I put some serious thought into making it an easy build, and it paid off . Look if a 20 year old can do it im sure most people can too

I had something very similar rolling around in my head to build, but you went ahead and actually did it.
I'm going to save this thread to refer back to when I finally build mine.
You wouldn't happen to have the dimensions of the parts, cuts, etc... written down would you?
