FIPG for 3RZ oil pan - tips?

Hey guys,

Fixing to seal up my 3RZ oil pan with some black Toyota FIPG. I’ve got the surfaces nice and clean.

I’m planning to apply a bead like the FSM says and install immediately. Bolt torque is 9 ft-lbf and I’ll work from center outward going in a spiral over a few passes. Will give 24 hr at least before filling the engine with oil.

Are there any other tips, tricks, or best practices folks can share?

Jordan, you should practice channeling your inner chi so you have steady hands when bringing that oil pan up to the bottom of the engine so you don't end up smearing the FIPG.

But in all seriousness, I was thinking if you could buy some short studs, maybe 4 (alignment studs) so you can have a stud in each corner so you can line up the bolts holes before the pan comes in contact with the engine block. This would lessen the chance of you smearing the FIPG bead before the bolts holes are lined up. I was thinking having the studs stick out no more than around a 1/2" so it still gives you room to maneuver the pan into place. Once you get some bolts installed on both sides, you can unscrew the studs with a pair of pliers.

Thanks Tim, I like the idea of extra studs. There are already two at the center of the pan. I may try adding some in other places, threaded in lightly so I can remove them.

When using FIPG do you install and then torque the fasteners immediately? Or do you finger tighten, wait 30-60min, and then torque them?

That black Toyota FIPG sets up pretty quick. When I've used that FIPG for valve cover gasket jobs, I assembled and immediately started tightening and torquing the valve cover bolts to spec. I did the same for cam shaft collars that hold the cam plugs. Applied the FIPG, put the collar and place and immediately torqued the bolts to spec.

The same goes for the Toyota Red FIPG used for transmissions and differentials. You are are suppose to assemble within 15 minutes of applying and there's nothing I've read that says you have to wait to torque the fasteners to spec.
