Fire Extinguisher Mounts/Mounting

Hey Fellow 4Runner Friends!
I've seen the Wits End extinguisher mount, but I'm short and need to pull my seat up almost all the way. Also, New England winters mean lots of water, salt, etc. so I'm looking at other mounting options.
I'll be installing my new Canada 3rd row cargo cover(s) this evening, and I was thinking maybe mounted flat on the right bumped out section with a Drake quick-release.

Thoughts?

Whatewer option you find, make sure you secure it well or it can kill you in case of accident. Do not use cheap plastic clamps.

you can always mount it on the passenger side....


To test out if the mount is right for you, put a fire extinguisher 1 or 2 inches forward of the seat bolt, thats where the fire extinguisher is going to rest.

The mount doesn't move with the seat, its always stationary, and quite honestly, I don't know its there when i drive b/c my feet is always on the petals or using the dead petal. Now if I"m not using the petals or dead petal, then you will always know the fire extinguisher is there, b/c you have no area to rest your feet.

So now if you are so short, that you can't reach the dead pedal, then yeah, the wits end bracket isn't for you...

Good example of don't open the hood until you determine where the smoke is coming from. Fight the fire from below, if you can. That guy held his composure and worked with the situation very well. Very impressive considering the situation. Glad that he wasn't in immediate danger, and that he had enough knowledge to prevent the fire from spreading.

That being said. I have had my extinguisher in the back seat now for a month or so (I know, I know...) while I have been debating the best place to mount it. I'll mount it this weekend more than likely and post back with what I come up with.

Agreed. It's a great case study in a sense, and he really held it together well. I appreciated his concern for environmental containment after the fact.

I don't carry an extinguisher daily but may change that now. On trips I keep mine on the floor board behind my driver seat, albeit unsecured. I used to keep it with my recovery gear until I had an unintentional discharge, inside my recovery gear box, while on a trip a few years ago.

I'm looking into a permanent solution now. I may also pick up a Halguard extinguisher. I've used dry chemical enough to know that I would not want to use one on a vehicle, even though it's what I've always packed. That's a slightly different conversation though, but in the same vein.

I used a Bracketeer and mounted a extinguisher under my seat. Been solidly mounted for about 10,000 miles. Some of which was over harsh off-road terrain. Hasn’t budged.

There's a quick release pin at the neck, and then it rotates out from the base. Thinking about getting one of these too.
 
Not to hijack the OP's thread, but awesome video, great lessons learned, and that dude is squared away! Great example of being cool under fire and remaining positive.

To the OP's question, I haven't found one for the 4RN yet, but used the front passenger seat mounting bracket on my 1LE Camaro. Worked great, easily accessible, simple to install.
 
Two questions:

1. Thoughts on screwing a mount to the rear floor in the right side opening? I test-installed it yesterday and like the location. Given where I live (New England), I'm not sure I want it where it can get salty/wet/muddy; given my height, I'm not sure I'd be able to pull the seat forward enough; and, frankly, given my size (requiring me to get out before pulling extinguisher), I'm not sure it's all that much faster than having it in back.

2. Someone mentioned not using the cheap plastic mount, which I test-fit. Does anyone know which one is on Wits End's page (the red one in the 3rd pic)? Fire Extinguisher Mount- 5th Gen 4Runner/GX460 (FEM-5)

The clamps stay attached to the extinguisher when removed. You dont unscrew to remove. THe clamps are attached to metal base that attaches to the mounted base (on storage panel) and released via a pin.

The only thing is this is meant for the storage panels but the OP says he has a third row, which cannot use storage panels.
