Firestone Dest AT : UPDATE

As many of you remember I bought these in a pinch back in Nov to replace my stock crap tires after driving in a little bit of snow. I bought stock size in a (P) rated tire. Well after running in winter storms , standing water , rain , off road in snow and street driving in snow storms I must say they are overlooked IMO. These have been better in all conditions than my BFG's AT's and the Revo first versions I've had .

It's a really nice tire , the only thing I noticed that I had to dial them in a little to adjust for fall , winter , and now spring as far as tweeking pressures to maximize traction and ride quality , but I've always done that so it was no different than I usually do . As the temp heats up I will raise the pressures to maximize rolling resistance , fuel econ , ect.... and find a happy medium for off road .

Great tire and a great price. They also have the UNI-T compound like the Revo's so they grip and stick without over wear. Also experienced no hydro planning in heavy water roads .

Any questions please let me know . Just my observations so far .

i had destination ATs in 285/70/17 on my Xterra for at least 25K miles and I loved them. Drove from FL to SC, NYC, VT, spent a week driving through snowstorms, and back and they were flawless the entire time. I think I may get some on the 4runner eventually.

Got some 275/ 70's on my sr-5 yesterday. I'm lovin the improved looks/ ride. I'm impressed w/ how quiet they are.

Yes I am not saying they are the best , but really have surprised me . I did not expect them to perform this well in all these conditions . A nice surprise.

KC did you get the P or LT rated ? I take it you put these on a stock non lifted 4R ??

I'd like to know as well. I want a slightly larger, more aggressive tire but don't want a lift yet. Also, how has it affected your gas mileage?

I got the LT. They ride slightly firmer and feel much more secure in the corners than the stock bridgestones. It's a stock sr-5. The size difference is very subtle. It doesn't look oversized at all; kind of looks like it should have come that way from the factory. The tread is aggressive, but not over the top. I think it suits the sr-5 nicely. In the short time I've had them I haven't noticed any issues w/ rubbing. I looked around on the forum quite a bit and everyone was having pretty good luck with this size. Mike G. has had some for a while and posted some nice pics.

I think 275 only comes in LT but I'm not completely sure on that. I haven't seen any p in that size. Only in 265 and 285.

Thanks for the info and update. I decided a couple days ago that I would go with Dest. But haven't decided on the size yet. The just reinforces my decision! Did you notice a difference in millage with the 275? They are a bit heavier than the p tires

I have 265/75/16 FS D A/T's on my tahoe, and the have worked great through 36" of snow in pagosa springs not once but 3 times, and the two blizzards we had in okc this year, also use them on some pretty cool red dirt roads down here in the Oil Patch. I love my 2003 LT 4x4 tahoe, but can't wait to go order a new 4Runner, planning to keep the tahoe as a 3rd vehicle boat hauler.

The 4Runner will compliment my 335i as naughty and nice, you can pick what is what.

P vs lt

I called firestone store today and the manager was saying to only go with the p's and I would hate the ride on the lt's.....the p's were 70 bucks less per tire but I would think the more plys and load c is the way to go on the 4runner. Thoughts? He also said the tires on it now are a better tire, the bridge dlrs ht. I seem to doubt that for a more diverse situation tire.

The ride is slightly firmer w/ the LT's, but I think it feels more sure-footed at the same time. It took away some of the floatiness.....I like it. Haven't driven enough to really know the effect on mpg.

Here's something I find interesting. I've rarely hear anything negative about the Destinations, while I have read quite a few less-than-satisfied reviews of the Revo 2s. The Revo 2s are ~$110 more for a set than the Destinations, and according to Bridgestone's website, they out-perform the Destinations in EVERY category! OK, perhaps it's marketing hoopla so that people buy the newer, more pricey Revo 2s, but I just cannot trust these ratings! Wouldn't you think the Destinations are, at least, a higher performing off road tire? If the Revo 2s are so superior, does it make sense for Bridgestone to keep producing the Destinations? I know cost is a key factor here, but until I looked them up, I thought the price disparity was in the $200 range--maybe I'm wrong, but I feel the average buyer wouldn't go for the "lesser performing" Destinations over $100 dollars.

I looked at the charts off tirerack.com and they show destinations being better and more recommended. I'd go with that.

The Revo 2's don't come in 275/70, so they weren't a contender for me. In 265, I'm sure you couldn't go wrong with either one.
