Firestone Destination A/T vs Toyo Open Country A/T rants and raves.

The time has come for new tread. The size I want is 265/65/18 which eliminates a lot of options such as the GY Duratracs, Nitto Terra Grapplers, etc. BFG T/A KO's are too agressive for my needs, Michellen LTX M/S2 are not agressive enough appearance wise for me, and Revo 2's are too pricey. Was considering the Hankook Dynapro AT-M's, but they appear to be on global back order and of the 25 places I have called locally no one has one on display for me to even see in person.

Down to two. Like the Firestones and there is a lot of info on them, but also like the Toyo's, however not as much info on them out there. Any tips from those of you with experience with either would be appreciated. I live in WI so they need to do well in snow/slush/sleet/rain etc. not just light powdery snow. Thanks.

if u like the nitto's, then get the toyo's, both are fairly close in looks but some consider the toyo better.. alot also like the destination at & reviews r good to, still imo, the toyo's would be the better choice, the duratracs can be had in 275/65/18, its a full 32in. but if ur lifted it should fit, not cheap tho.

I don't know much about the Toyo's but I had the destination A/T's on my 3rd gen runner and absolutely loved them. Loved them so much I'm getting them again when my 4th gen needs tires. They're super quiet yet have a good tread pattern and are like glue in snow. For me, you really can't get a better A/T tire for the price. My $0.02

The toyos usually balance out really nice. Nitto and Toyo are sister companies so your getting the same rubber either way. I would say Toyo is more of the premier brand but they are close.

I have not tried the other tires you are considering, but these are my impressions of the Firestone's. I agree with Krupnation, I have had the Destination A/T's on for 2yrs now and I am really impressed. I bought them based on their great reviews and low price and they are living up to their reputation. They are quiet, smooth, look moderately aggressive and have great road manners ( handling, no hydroplaning in heavy rain and great wet traction). In 4wd, they have been great in winter conditions as well. I have had them in deep snow, light snow, slippery brown snow, slush. really cold temps, etc. I bought the stock size and I did not notice any significant decrease in fuel mileage compared to the OEM Dunlops.

Thanks for the responses! To those of you that recommened the Toyo Open Country A/T's, do you or did you actually have these on your vehilce at one point? It sounds like some of you are considering the the Toyo's more of a prerium brand over the Firestone's, which is great to know, but I'm still looking for some real life driving feedback on the Toyo's... how tread life held up, road noise, how they handled different climate conditions etc. Thanks.

Toyo's! I've had them on several 4Runners now, and they do not dissapoint. They are cost effective, quiet, give a great ride and balance very easily. They masters of the snow the last winter with ease with several days of tough stuff 12+, 18+, slush and muck they had no issues.

Tread life seems fine I have 20k on them and they seem like they are good for at least another 30-40k. 5k rotation.

Ok so after further investigation on the Firestone website I discovered this:

The stock size will fit fine, but I really wanted to bump up one size taller. According to thier specs it doesn't look like the taller size is recommended for the 7.5" wide Limited rim. Can I getaway with this or will it not work?

i am with you, I had them on my 98, ran wore 3 sets out and they were always good, when these garbage tires wear out on mine im going back to them as well...

Toyo Open Country ATs are incredible! I will buy another set when I wear these out. I have them on a stock 2004 Limited 4x4 and I love them...great on the interstate and quiet...not just for an AT tire - they are quiet for any suv tire.

Thanks everyone. I went with the Firestones this round and so far I love them. Super quiet, don't hear them at all. Rides very nice, no balance or vibration issues (used road force balancer). I'll see how they wear and how they perform in the winter. Good to know I can always give the Toyo's a shot if these don't work out.
