Became an owner of the highly coveted 1st gen 4runner today. It's a 1986 with 123k miles on it, estimated 50k miles on 2nd jasper engine (no knocking ticking or leaks of any sort). Frame is solid with minimal surface rust and body only has a few splashes of rust along bottom side of both doors and a couple of quarter size splotches on the rear quarter panels/tailgate area. Paid $1600 for it. I feel I got a decent deal even taking into the account there are things to fix. What are your thoughts? I'm no mechanic, but I can tinker pretty good.
To do list (so far) and no modding yet until it gets a little more solid:
Major:
New tires
New brakes or bleeding (not sure yet)
Less than major but still high:
Flush fluids
Cv axels (passenger side only -makes noise in 4WD LOW)
Fix fuel gauge issue
E-brake
Previous owners lost key to lock and unlock vehicle, so I can't lock it unfortunately.
Minor:
Radio needs to be rewired. Previous owner made a mess of the stock harness and speaker wires.
Interior improvements (tightening down loose plastic moulding pieces like shifter cover)
New seats
New bumpers
New carpet or door panels (or just clean them up nicely)
New weather stripping
I'm from Ohio and now in the Navy training down in Pensacola, FL. I look forward to this project and sharing stories with you guys.
