First 5k oil change. I want to avoid dealership.. Mobil1 or OEM oil?

Mobil 1 is fine, but there are technically better oils, some for less money. If you have no interest in going down the rabbit hole, just pick the cheapest synthetic and change it every 5,000 miles.

BITOG, or bobistheoilguy.com, has all the answers, and many more, for what you need.

I suspect it's not engineering recommending the 10K service intervals but rather the sales/marketing that are promoting that to sell vehicles and feel the need to compete with what other MFG's are saying. Do what makes sense to you is the bottom line.

If you cut $100 in cost for each car sold related to “free maintenance”, you save a ton of money. It’s just one of many ways a savvy car marker can increase margins. I think the sales and marketing people have the upper hand and said to engineering, “prove 10,000 miles is not good enough to cover our warranty obligations”, which engineering most likely cannot do.

And here we encroach upon the engineer vs mechanic, the 10K vs 5k, the calculations vs experience arguement.

A) 10,000 miles / 60 miles per hour (average) = 166 hours to achieve 10K miles

B) 2500 revolutions per MINUTE (average) X 60 minutes per hour = 150,000 revolutions per hour

166 hours (from A) X 150,000 revolutions per hour (from B) = 24,900,000 revolutions per 10,000 miles at average 60 miles per hours and average 2500 rpm engine speed.

That’s just shy of 25,000,000 (MILLION) revolutions of the engine’s internals.

Before I get chastised, my figures don’t tabulate engine idling which isn’t easy to calculate. So that’s why I shoot higher to account for those incalculable portion of revolutions.

So at 50 mph average and 2000 rpm average that’s still 24,000,000 revolutions for 10K miles.

Or 60 mph average and 2,000 rpm average that’s 20,000,000 revolutions for 10K miles.

Have fun with my proposed calculations and plug in whatever numbers you want. I’m just guessing on averages. Either way, 10K seems too long for me. Always been 5K. Half of all that time of that shit spinning.

Toyota Synthetic for me, from research it is far better than others. I used to put Mobil 1 in my cars but they changed the blend quite a few years ago, so no more.

I did my 1st oil change at 5k, now i shoot for 8500-10000.

Is Toyota OEM oil Mobil 1???

Well, it says exxon/mobil on the back of the bottle.

Fun to check in here once in a while. With the history of this engine/drivetrain in the 5th gen, every thread now is just a re-hash of previous re-hash' . Tiresome, but funny. Search feature is your friend, but google search then look for t4r.org links for that search is a better route to take.

I can't wait for the 6th gen, if just for new reading material.

Yeah, it's not "Mobil 1" but may be made by Mobil? Apparently Toyotas synthetic is about 35% lighter than Mobil 1's 0W20 at 0C (32F) and 25% lighter at room temperatures.

Yeah, forums are so repetitive and searches rarely get you what you need. In the end people just need the interaction. lol

Go watch the car care nut guy on utube. He's a Toyota master mechanic. He recommends no matter what type of oil you use is to change it every 5K miles. He also said the Toyota oil is actually Mobil 1 so use that if you can find it cheaper or on sale. Personally if I mostly drive in hot desert weather, off road in dusty areas I would stick to 5K mile intervals. If on the other hand you mostly drive on road, no towing etc. 10K is probably fine. This is what I would tend to do.
I see a lot of highway and no wheeling on mine to speak of. I do 7500 with Castrol synthetic. Either Edge or Magnatec, whichever I have in 0w-20. 155k and it runs like the day I got it with 50k on it.

A few years ago, I read on "Bob is the oil guy.com" that Toyota synthetic OEM oil is made by Mobil, with Toyotas additive package. I don't know what their additive package consists of, but for $7 a quart, I always use the OEM synthetic every 10K miles. (with the OEM filter kit)
