First Beach Ride

We'll be taking our first beach trip to Oceano Dunes in July. Can't wait to see how the 4Runner handles the sand.

I have been there a few times, your 4Runner will surprise you on how well it does. I was on my stock Dunlops aired down to 15 to 18 and went everywhere the JKs went. I have a TE with Multi-Terrain, I set it on the first setting - Mud, Sand -- in 4H and 4L and it did great.

Awesome to hear! We're really excited to head out there. I've been there a few times when I had my F250 Diesel. This is the first trip with my 7 yr old son and my 4 yr old daughter. They're looking forward to camping on the beach.

Yep, I'd like to see a FL aired up try to come up the 30 degree incline at Ramp 38 in that deep soft stuff crossing 8-10 inch ruts.:loco:

Planning a day trip with the family to OBX and want to spend the majority of the time on the 4x4 beaches. Some research came up with this about rest rooms.

Restrooms – There are no public restrooms on the northern Currituck beaches. Public urination is prohibited in Currituck County.

Stupid question, but where do you guys do your business at? Do you guys bring a port a potty, dig a hole somewhere on the beach or drive off the beach to a local place? :shrug:

I have a 5 gallon bucket with plastic bag and a toilet seat for the gals and a plastic wide mouth jug for the guys, although the bucket works for both. Just hold up a towel between two open doors. Never had a problem with that approach from the NC / VA line to Ocracoke. Disposal is later at a public facility or back at my house. And of course the bucket works for #2 if needed.

Where is all of this beach driving in Florida? I'm guessing its all either North or West b/c I can't find any place down here. I'm still new to the state and the only place that I can find via searches is Daytona.

Lol! Ramp 38 is no joke. Most the recoveries I've done where on Ramp 38. Pulled out a Saturn in my dads F350 years ago at Billy Mitchell lol. They made it off the street and that's it hahaha. Hooked up foot off the break and out. I miss it out there.

Sounds good. In the fall, after plover season, you can get right out onto the beach.

Anyone know of any beaches on the cape that you can drive on?

I know sandy neck beach in Barnstable/sandwich lets you drive on, as well as race point up on Truro/ptown. Only been to the former though

These pics are getting me excited! Heading back down to the OBX in August... Can't wait to take a ride up to Corolla and Corova.... :guitar3: ... We have drive-on beaches here in Delaware, and the holiday weekends provide plenty of entertainment for sure....

haha, possibly... the one i go to in st augustine gets pretty soft.

St Augustine, I used to take my Camaro there frequently.
An hour north to Nassau Sound will provide some better 4X only terrain.
I don't air down either and she crawls right on through in 4 hi.
I'm sure the Carolina outer banks have some interesting areas that would require some vehicles to air down. Keep in mind that footprint is what's gained and not all vehicles need to air down based on tire size and vehicle weight to stay on top of the sand. Tread patterns aren't critical but less aggressive is better. Youre trying to stay on top as much as possible and keep wheel spin at zero.
Rear drive only dune buggies with VW engines used to walk everywhere with some slicks on them. They were light with wide back tires and float on the sand comparatively. But we're talking about fat SUV's here.
