First gear kicks out under load

As the title says, my 1st generation (87) kicks out of gear under even a light load. If i keep my hand on the gear shift, then i do not feel any force at all, but it seems that if the stick is allowed to rest on the exit of the gear slot, it slips out easily. I have seen many people fix their trans with simple things like a new spring, or the like. Does anyone have an idea for this problem?

Let me know if and when you get this fixed. I have the same issue. It can be a real pain when I am climbing up a rock hill and I need both hands.

Same problem here, ever since I bought the car 2 years ago, 1991 V6... Only on first gear, I just have to keep a small amount of pressure on the stick to stop it. Catches anyone out who drives the car and doesnt know about it.
Changed transmission oil with no luck.
Keen to hear if you have a solution.

Cheers,
Rob

It's likely an issue with the syncros inside the transmission. My original transmission in my current 4Runner would not stay in 1st unless I held it, and it would pop out of 3rd if I let off the gas. I replaced the transmission.

I replaced the transmission.
