First gen 4Runner 1988 can't open tail gate

Silly question, but I have to ask:
How can I open the tail gate in a 4R 1988?
I think this is the procedure:
1. roll the windows down
2. unlock from the gate
3. open the gate with the latch.
but I can't open it.
Can you point me in the right direction to solve this, please.

Were you able to lift the lock? Is the handle engaging when you pull it? Maybe it's jammed and you need to pursued it with a kick from the inside..

Did you take off the interior piece so you can see the locking mechanism?

Make sure the rear window is ALL :lookout:the way down, then lift up on the inside lock.

I just got my 4R 1 hour ago, I wanted to be sure I'm following the right procedure to open the gate.
I didn't remove the panel which cover the tail gate, but I guess that's the first thing I'm going to do if your suggestion doesn't work.

I've had that happen.
In my case the internal mechanism had seized up due to lack of lubrication. I removed the cover from inside the vehicle and lubed and freed it up.
