First Gen 4Runner speaker suggestions

I'd like to replace the 4" speakers in front and the 6.5" speakers in the back of my '88 4runner . . . does anyone have any suggestions of what's worked for them. I pulled one rear panel yesterday and notice there is a metal bracket for the speaker that's in there. I'd prefer to not cut anything, and realize it will effect sound quality to some degree, but it has the original speakers in now, so it should sound much better than those!

I have a Clarion ProAudio CD deck in there with a 40x4 power rating.

I did notice another thing. The mounting surface is not flat. The factory speaker screws in at two corners, and one corner has a bend (at top) to accomodate the dash.

It looks like I'd have to find or make a spacer, or something custom to fit a different 4" speaker.

Does anyone know about this????

I have 85 PU and had a 90 4Runner that use the 4T front speakers - I used Sony 2 way (Xplod XS-W4021) in one and Pioneer 2 way in the other -- what a difference over the worn out paper OEM. Crutchfield has a good online fitment chart. They supply any needed adapter plates and pigtail plugs too if you order from them. The 90 4Runner took 5 1/2 with a supplied plastic adapter -- appears a 6 or 6x9 would have worked too. If you still have stock radio -you might want an amp for the rear ones.
