First mod?!?

Hmm well, if you plan on offroading it, then a good set of all terrains are generally the first thing.
For armor, the very first thing is sliders! Even if you get nothing else.
Then a reasonable but quality suspension lift (no spacers) of 2-2.5 inches to give yourself some travel without bottoming out.
So for offroading, IMHO you want to get
1) Tires (Assuming stock or only slightly larger)
2) Sliders
3) Lift
In that order.

There are a ton of cool mods you can do to enhance your Runner that range from cheap to insanely expensive. As far as your first, is suspension the most important priority for you right now? Is your Runner a 4x4? What is your budget? The range of suspension/lift options range from $120.00 up to $6,000.00 and beyond. Other cool mods that can be done are: HID's, gauge cluster and HVAC control panel LED swap in a variety of colors, leather seat cover install, roof top basket, light bars, sliders, winch bumper, rear swing out tire carrier/bumper and so on. The sky is the limit (or rather, your bank account). Keep us posted on what you opt to do!

This. If you follow this advice you will be able to handle 90% + of anything you will encounter off road.

Have stock sized tires but Cooper AT3 they seemed to well for all I can do around here. Just came back from trip to smoky mountains and hit a few trails I use to do in my Jeep. I was very pleased, so lift and sliders I go. Haven't even looked into sliders, so I need ideas there. As for lift goes my budget would be about 1000. Thinking the front and rear coil kit from toytec that has bilstein 5100. Any other good ideas?
1. Suspension lift and larger tires. All of this can be bought used so that should negate some of the high cost.
2. Remove your running boards to give it a more aggressive look unless your just a little guy or you have a nagging significant other.
3. Since you have an 06' grille you can do the Satoshi mod for very cheap and it really makes the truck stand out.

welcome to the forum, always happy to see another Carolina member!
These guys won't steer you wrong. A lift is a good place to start for offroad mod needs.
a few outside the box thoughts though that I've enjoyed are
-LED lights in all the map lights and courtesy door lights. (20 bucks if you part all the bulbs and led smd boards on amazon)
-touch screen/ blue tooth head unit with back up camera. (add led reverse lights for even better reversing ease)
-all weather floor matts are pretty amazing things. I prefer the weather techs.
-A good battery for any future accessories..
-If the seats are in rough shape you can add clazio covers relatively inexpensive way to face lift the interior.
-probably one of my most favorite mods was getting rid of all the orange lights on the gauge clusters and hvac control panel. (superbrightleds.com) with a little research on bulb types.
-rock sliders (I prefer weld on for strength) 4xinnovations is the route I chose and have really enjoyed. They haven't faltered on me yet which is great because they were the cheapest option I found lol.
-I'm gonna have to recommend bud built skids and under body protection because they're located in north carolina. Not cheap per say but very good quality and very good people.
-then of course lift, larger tires, upper control arms, rear axle controls arms. rear lockers are amazing, front lockers are even more awesome, gears for the larger tires. It goes on an on an on.
