First Oil Change

It's a good idea. period. Here is my "story".
I changed my filter at 25 miles. (bought 6 at the dealer when I bought my truck and changed it as soon as I got home). I did an oil analysis at work (freebies here) and it did show lots of particulates and metals suspended in the oil. I then changed the oil and filter again at about 350, again another analysis and still had particulates in the oil, albeit much much less. My third oil and filter change at ~800 miles and yet another analysis. It came out clean as a whistle .
My truck was built 11/05 according to the dataplate so the oil was at least 2 months old. probably more since I have no way of knowing when the motor was built or how long it was stored before installation. The analysis' showed higher then normal levels of silicates (sp) indicating dirt and plenty of aluminium. some other metals were present as well.
So, if you ask me, I'll tell you sure! 1000 miles is fine. I would do it sooner though.

A little side note, Toyota has a recommended oil change, if you go over that they may not cover a problem under their warranty. I read a story on Edmunds where a Lexus owner had sludge ruin his engine, but he did not change his amsoil in over 20,000 miles. Bottom line, Lexus (Toyota) did not cover the problem.Zachary said:

The new Mobile 1 Extended oil (which is for 15,000 miles) seems to be a great oil. Still, I change my oil every 5,000 miles. I have been doing so on all of my vehicles (with regular Mobil 1 - which is still WAY better than conventional oil) and never had a problem.
Interestingly, my BMW 545i calls for oil changes ever 15,000 miles. That's way to much for me, even though its recommended. I changed it at about halfway, 7,500 miles, and will continue to do so. BMW will change the oil for free during the first 50,000 miles (but only every 15,000 miles, so any oil changes in between I have to pay for- which cost about $95.)

Oil Change
I had the first oil & filter change done gratis by the stealership - at close to 2,000 miles and with dino oil. I was going on a long trip and did not want to wait until I got back home again.
I did it again myself at roughly 5,000 miles; but with Mobil-1 synthetic. I changed it at 8,000 miles and will do so again when I hit about 12,000. I have 10,500 on it now and the oil still looks very, very clean. I get the six-pack of quarts from Costco and bought a bundle of filters from the stealership for five bucks apiece. Even with synthetic oil, it is still cheaper to do it myself than the dealer would charge for doing an oil change with 'regular' dino oil.

i just did my first change yesterday as well. . I went with Dino oil for this one. . and will switch to Mobil 1 at 5K. . Also went with the Bosch oil filter, and installed my fumoto valve at the same time. I was impressed with everything under there, and realize I need to clean the sand/salt from last week's storms a little better.
