First Oil Change

I bought my first 4runner three months ago with 47,500 miles. It is time for my first oil change. It is a 2001 Sport. I have been toying with the idea of switching to a synthetic. Any thoughts? And does anyone use anything other than the standard weight? I'd appreciate any feedback on the subject.

i have a 2002 with 115,000 on the odo and i just switched to synthetic at 100k. i use mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic. id say go for it and never look back, just be sure to use toyota filters and change the filter ever 3k and the oil every 5k and your good to go

I'm partial to Puralator PureOne filters and I change both at 9k with no ill effects. It's more about how much time the oil is in your engine since 9k miles on mine takes about 10 months to accumulate and I wouldn't want the same oil in the engine much longer than that.

I think it would be fine with that kind of mileage. I for one think cars with high mileage, it is best to stick with what ever they use, but that should good to change over now. I use Mobil 1 and I notice the oil stays lighter longer. I stuck with 5 W 30 and I use that year round. If you lived up north, I would say going with even a lighter oil would be OK, especially for winter. ( Ithink Mobil 1 makes a 0 W 30.)

You might want to do a search on "oil change", you will notice that the 3rd generation oil change can be a challanging thing to do. The filter is a bit hard to get to.

I forgot to add that I only use OEM filters, you can buy them in a case of 10 for $35 so it's money well spent.

yeah i have been using mobil 1 5w30 full synthetic ever since i got my 4runner at 110k miles. it has worked great. i still try to change before it hits 5k miles... although mobil 1 does make a new extended performance oil that claims to last 15,000 miles. i dont believe it though

I use Mobile 1 Truck and SUV Synthetic and a Toyota Filter every 5000+/- miles. No problems!
