first time buying custom wheels

I'm wanting to get a set of 16" wheels to replace my stock 17's. I want a different look and 16's are not only cheaper but tires are cheaper as well. I can get a set in 16x8 and use 265/70/16 which would be equal in overall height to my stock size 17" tires.

My question is about bolt pattern and backspacing. I know that bolt pattern is 6x139mm, but I don't see that size listed, is it the same as 6x5.5? Also can I go with less backspacing than stock without damaging the stock hubs or suspension? I'm looking at Dick Cepek DC-2 wheels and on Summit the only ones listed in 16x8 and 6x5.5 have 4" backspacing and -12mm offset.

Would those fit or stick out too far? I'd like to have the new wheels fit just like stock or close to it.

If 16s would fit on my rig I would definitely go with them... To answer questions, I believe it is the same as 6 on 5.5, and 3/4" less backspacing might be nice. A bunch of people on here run 1.25" spacers to get their wheels to stick out of the wells further (and I believe that's on a 4.75" backspacing wheel making the backspacing effectively 3.5"). So I believe they would be fine.

The 17" wheel is an option, base wheels are 16" so it'd look fine.

I'm old school, my Lincoln has 15" wheels and raised white letter tires, muscle car style :biggrin1:

hey i'm with you 100%, a smaller wheel means more beef (rubber) showing which i think looks great on an SUV.
If you look for wheels with a 6 x 139 bolt pattern, when you look at the fine print you should see what they really mean is 6 x 139.7, as in millimeters, which is the same as 5.5 inches.
I have a 5th-Gen but I went through a similar process because I ended up buying an aftermarket wheel with a -12 offset. The stock tires tended to sit a little inside the wheel well so when I went to the -12 offset, they pushed out and are closer to "flush" with the stock fender flares. This also creates the illusion of bigger tires without resorting to wheel spacers.
I did experience minor rubbing initially but was able to fix by minor changes to the plastic parts inside the front wheel wells.

16" wheels should be fine, I don't believe the SR5 had the optional big brake kit that forces you to use 17" or larger rims. Bolt pattern is 6x5.5 which is what Toyota has used on all their trucks for a couple decade now (different backspacing on some vehicles, but the 6 lug pattern has been the same.)

Be careful with that advice. Yes, Toyota's 6x139 bolt pattern is pretty much the same as GM's 6x5.5 bolt pattern but when ordering wheels, you can't just go by that. GM uses a much smaller hub bore (78 mm vs 106 mm for the Toyota) so when considering wheels, make sure they are designed for Toyota's hub and not GM's

No they won't fit! SR5 brakes are small so 16s from SR5 will not fit.... I almost had my hands on 17s but guy backed out for that reason. He would have had to replace calipers pads rotors etc.... To use 16s.

I don't mean to be rude, but the way that is worded is confusing... are you saying SR5s DID come with optional larger brake calipers?

Sorry after looking at what i said it does!!!! From a post that i have seen on here apparently so. I could be mistaken though. Maybe through the different model????
 
He has an SR5. 16" wheels will be just fine. You can grab them also from FJ's & Tacoma's that used 16's.
