First time getting my 4R dirty, any tips?

hi fellows, i am going to get my 4R dirty next week, my first time. and i am newbie too.

some of the friends are gathering up and going to some very very beginner level trial in Sacramento, called "Prairie City Off Road Park". expecting some mud, water, incline, decline.... but i am not going to touch any rocks.

my 4R is totally stock, 07 Limited V8 with stock Michelin X-terrain tires, do you think they will do ok on that beginning level trial?

any tips or stuff i have to beware of?

thanks for any suggestion and opinion.

I always like a fresh coat of wax. It's amazing how much it helps with twigs etc. The other good thing is when washing the mud off you're far less likely to scratch it.

I agree what ever you do sprayoff the mud before handwashing your T4R. Dont learn the hard way like I did. A pressure washer works best for getting the hard stuff off, but be sure everything is off before going to handwashing, I cannot stress this enough. After I made the mistake my black T4R was scratched beyond belief
 
Go out and get it as dirty as possible...then show up Monday morning and park next to the really shiny cars in the parking lot. It is a lot of fun hehe.

I have run many trails with "street" tires and haven't had any real issues. You shouldn't have any problems provided you stay away from sharp rocks that can rip into the sidewalls. That is where the Michelins will let you down. We ran a black diamond with the X-terrains and I ripped a sidewall open, but it did take a black trail to finally do that. So you shouldn't have any trouble. Go out and have a blast!!!
 
thanks for the heads up!!!! yea i will take the before and after pictures, of course some mud turns pictures for sure. our crew so far has my 4R and my dad's 2000 mercedes ML (yea i know, but at least it was built for it, so why not), friend's 4R and his dad's H2, and my other friend's FJ Team Trail edition.

hope we will have some good fun in the thanksgiving day morning, yea we are planning to go on that morning before having family dinners, and hopefully it's gonna be a very memorable thanksgiving activity.

hey melinda, no we haven't go up yet, it's gonna thanksgiving morning. yea it's our first time so we are gonna take it easy.... and of course try to get my 4R as dirty as possible.... pictures will be up over the weekend....

now, for regular pond, say one foot deep water, should i stay in H4 or L4?

or for example, in what kind of situation i can stay in H4 and what situation i should switch to L4? thanks for all advices!!!!!!

It kinda depends on the terrain. Flat with an average speed of faster than 10-12mph 4Hi should be fine. Try both and use whichever feels better.

1) Do turn off the RSCA side airbags.
2) Once off of the pavement lock the center diff so the VSC/Trac doesn't sap all of your power mid-puddle.

yea, i do aware of the RSCA, hahahaha, i dont want to get smash by the side airbags in the middle of having fun...

how to lock the center diff?

press the button on the left side of the steering wheel in the dash panel next to the AC power adapter...I am anxiously awaiting pictures :D

It depends on the terrain. You can probably stay in 4Hi most of the time and in Drive. If you are in a sticky spot and aren't sure you can put it into Lo or 2nd. The lower gears are more for crawling or controlling your descent down a hill. When you get out there give it a try and you will see what works and what doesn't.
 
I agree. On the flats, in 4 Low, you can leave it in D. But if you are slowly crawling up a hill, down a hill, or over big rocks, that's when to shift all the way down to the lowest gear.

Spraying the wheel wheels down with WD-40 will help getting them clean again a little bit easier. Someone suggested the cook spray PAM as an alternative.

Done it and :iagree:


Do be careful. Minor amounts of overspray on the brake rotors is no big deal. Expect strange things the first stop or two after application. It will return to normal after that:D Just don't want it to catch you by surprise, that would suck!
