First time wheeling - Best places to start?

Went up there but almost at the top wifey was white knuckling on the passenger side. Never made it to the top. I'm thinking of hitting San Gabriel OHV park next.

Our little family trip to Santiago Peak today
Wish there was sum mud but oh well... wifey was white knuckling it on the passenger side; while the kids in the back was egging me on... but sadly The boss won and we never made to the top...
Alittle bit of pin striping but luckily it was superficial and wiped right off

So I am pretty sure you can make it up there from Trabuca creek road (as I call it holy Jim hiking trail road) so I took a screen shot of the satellite view from my phone where I turned off the Trabuca creek road (circled in red) and headed up the mountain, I almost made it up to the top but I needed a spotter and turned around, at or around (circle blue). Here are some pictures I took when I was up there two weeks ago. I am always looking to go again if anyone is interested but you will need a lift and 4wd. There is also a big mud hole that I went through last time that was as deep as my fog lights.

if you look at google maps ... it says it splits into ( if you make right )Joplin Truck Trail and ( if you make a Left )Santiago Truck Trail...
None of those goes to Santiago Peak ... unless you hump it on foot... I dont think I'll be making that hike with a 6yr old & a 7yr old

Ah ok! Thanks for looking it up. One day I found the trail and thought it was fun and a good way to test out my trucks capabilities. The few times I have been up there I never saw any other trucks, only dirt bikes.

Glad to see your getting out to test your truck! Little piece of advice (though im no offroad veteran), avoid mud holes if you can(especially high speeds), more trouble than theyre worth. Spend hours cleaning mud out of frame rails, breaking parts , hydrolocking motor etc. Some may argue with my statement or disagree but im sure im not alone in my opinion.

Go to the Big Bear Discovery Center in Fawnskin. They have a map. They also have stuff for the kids there.

I use to have a H2 Hummer. And I've gotten it stuck in the mud as deep enough that the bottom of my driveside door was level with the mud. I spend 2hrs with a pressure washer.

Holy jim is not closed.... people live back there so it will never be... I live at the mouth of it... Santiago peak on the other hand is.... forest service has meltdowns and when the fire danger gets above moderate or high they usually shut the gates on the Silverado side. the gate that accesses Saddleback from holy Jim/trabuco canyon is always locked. Only access really is from ortega, silvarado, and riverside side. freaks me out that they lock the gates like that with little warning, a "universal key" should be carried if you 4wheel up Saddleback and plan on heading down in the dark, you might find yourself driving for 2 hrs only to find the only gate out has been locked. we had a few horror stories in highschool with that happening
Edit: and don't go off trail in trabuco canyon... local people have been getting pissed and burying 2x4s with nails and screws in the mud pits/illigal trails. Pretty messed up if you ask me...

This is a great trail for multiple reasons. The shooting area in Bee Canyon, the North Fork San Jac crossing (great for kids) and yellow post camping near the top. Going down the Mtn, to avoid the hwy, take McGovern/Redhill to Old Control Road. Old Control Rd dumps onto the 74 a little farther E of Bee Canyon.
Watch out for UTV's, ATV's etc. though, I usually pass more of them along the trail than vehicles. I was up there earlier this year and stopped at the San Jac water crossing to let my kids play. They had a blast.
