OK so we just got a massive snow storm (blizzard, according to the NWS) - the 2nd "blizzard" in 25 years. SO - this was also the first snow storm since I had the new 4runner.
So my dad, brother, and I were looking for something to do this evening and remembered he had a tow strap (not a proper recovery strap) and I had a flashlight, and a half tank of gas.
So, two hours later, we towed 6 cars, and pushed (by hand) 2 to slightly less hilly terrain.
The rescued vehicles include:
1. ~03 Chevy Silverado (tow)
2. ~02 Chevy Suburban (tow)
3. ~mid 90's Lincoln Towncar (tow)
4. ~03 Pontiac something (tow)
5. ~80 Olds Cutlass (tow)
6. ~07 Honda CR-V (tow)
7. ~00 Jeep Cherokee (push)
8. ~Late model Ford Ranger (push)
The only car we tried to tow and couldn't was a camry, we could not find a tow hook under the front end.
All in all, it was probably 2 of the most joyous 2 hours of my life (recently). I have never previously owned a 4wd vehicle and it was tons of fun getting to use it - especially on Christmas eve helping out some strangers. I am all of the sudden much more fond of vehicles with tow hooks and drivers who will lay down in the snow and strap up their own vehicle.
We were all very impressed with how easy it was to drag people up hills with the Dunlop Grandtreks (Highway tires) as well as how easily the 4runner handled it.
Also saw another rescue attempt that resulted in a ripped off bumper. We did not damage any vehicles in the process (quite proud of that).
Sorry I have no good pictures, other cars were honking and being asses, so I didn't go out of my way to document each rescue.
Bottom line - awesome car, surprisingly good tires, tons of fun, my toes are frozen, some people are very gracious, some people only ask for a lighter after you pull them to safety (no thank you's), some people cannot speak english and don't understand "Neutral" or "No, turn your wheels THAT way".
