First timer Hollister Hills Questions

Hey,

I'm heading up to hollister hills in the next couple weeks. This is going to be my first time up there going with a friend who has also never been up there.

was wondering if you guys could give me some info on the 4x4 spots in HH for a pretty much stock 98 4runner and an 84 4runner

HH can be anything from mild to wild, pending on the trails you take. Get a map at the Ranger station and you should be OK. People normally start off at the obstacle course and then work their way up. Be careful of mud this time of year, pending on rains the week before you go. The mud can be far more tricky than it looks (especially if you have street tires), sometimes the mud is forgiving sometimes not.

Hmm... would LOVE to plan a trip up there for some friends and me. My 2K5 'Runner is almost all stock (will DEFINETLY get Revo's tho before even thinking of going to HH) and was wondering if I should invite a bunch of people. I'm the only one pretty much with a SUV and don't want to bring too many people cause I'm assuming their (dead haha!) weight will hamper my off roading. and also was wondering if you have any suggestions as to which trails to take for a noob like me and what your take on the mud situation is. personally I'd love to drive around downtown SF in a mud caked 'Runner! get back to me... thanks

First don't go alone as you might need a pull at some point.

Get a map at the ranger station when you go. First do some green trails and see how you feel about it, then do some blue ones if you are up to it. Probaly avoid the black diamond ones if it is your first time, unless you have a more experienced person going with you to check it out. Truck Hill and Five Fingers are fun climbs, but they can be very dangerous pending on the condition of the road surface. They can be very easy to climb or very difficult pending of how much it is washed out, etc. Their are plenty of mud hole sin the area, but use caution. Avoid the mudpit at the obstacle course at all cost. I have only seen it doable once, but the rest of the time it can eat even big trucks with 37s or 40s. DO the stairsteps there, a lot of fun, avoid the frame twister unless you have a lot of clearance or sliders. The Qaurry is normally fun.

So just get a map at the Ranger Station and enjoy.

PS: The mud is a real PITA to clean later once it is hard. There is a waterhpse point by the bike area where you can clean your wheels once you are done and air at the Ranger station to air up. Just ask at the Ranger Station.

I will def be sticking to the greens my first time out. I got the 4runner and hes got the tacoma. I'll make sure to have tow ropes / straps in case one of us needs a pull...

Yeah let me know bro. I just ordered Revo's at Costco (snuck in the oversize 265/70-17's) and I should have them installed next week hopefully. It'd be nice to get some experience and tips from peeps with similar rigs (almost totally stock 'Runners) such as mine. Hopefully we won't need to be pulled out tho especially with all this rain we're having right now in the Bay!
