First traction control encounter in the snow..

I was trying to get traction to control to engage under heavy acceleration on snowed roads (closed roads). When it did the icon of a car with skid marks below it appeared on the instrument cluster and flashed while I could here this constant ticking sound as the RPMS fluctuate. Also when I went for a hard stop there was a good amount of mechanical ruckus brake pedal would fluctuate and give a bit.

This is my first vehicle with traction control and ABS, was this normal?

Yes completely normal.

When I first heard the vsc i kinda freaked out. It was pretty funny.

Yep, that's normal. I took mine out & played in the snow, too..

As I understand it, the frakkin' computer will activate the ABS system & override your control of the throttle, and then coordinate both to try to control the skid.
Frakkin' computers, I'll drive the truck, thank you.

Stock config (for an '06, anyway) you can turn the system off by locking the center differential. Don't do this on anything less than a total slop surface, however. Dirt/wet roads/etc. don't allow enough slip to prevent binding.

You can bet by next winter, I'll have figured out how to put a switch on the dashboard to turn the VSC system off.

Has anyone determined if this "feature" can be turned off by a mod or otherwise? Traction control is fine when my wife drives the 4Runner, but I like a lot more "play" in my style of driving in the snow.

Pre-08 there's 3 ways to turn it off:
1) Lock the center diff (ATRAC still active but engine will produce full power)
2) Pull the wire on the front of the brake master cylinder. No ATRAC (limited-slip) though.
3) Do the mod in my signature (ATRAC still active but engine will produce full power)

In '08 they added a switch from the factory.

Thanks Chris, I might just try your the mod you have in your sig. Although, I might try to get the 08 switch and relay like your talking about. Its just no fun in the snow with the VSC.

You think that's noisy? Use the DAC sometime on a ski slope. The girlfriend and my friend spotting me thought the truck was gonna eshplode.

I had a similar thing happen but it wasnt because i lost traction. I was at a stop sign on a hill and i went to hit the gas and the car rolled backwards and the traction controll signal turned on and i heared a similar clicking noise and the car beeped. I wasnt sure what that was all about but I didnt think automatics were supposed to roll backwards on a hill while in drive. Anyone else had that issue.

I have not had the opportunity for my Limited to show its TC, but ic can NOT be nearly as bad as the intrusive (and quick) actions of my C5. Most days, in normal driving, I get a message that the TC/AH has found a reason to activate.......I actually drive the thing easier than my Limited.

Ya any automatic can roll backwards on a hill. For some time now most have a Hill Hold feature that applies the brakes just a little to try and hold the car still. It's only partially effective on any car. 4R has it.
