I live in Phoenix and the dunes are about 3 hours away. I was hauling a trailer with 4 quads, coolers, chairs, gas cans, and everything else needed for 5 people for the weekend. I have a 2008 black urban runner, v6, with 265/70/r17 nitto terra grapplers. From Phoenix to the dunes the speed limit is 75. I had no problems going 80 the whole way even through the mountains. I did have to pedal it though as the cruise control wanted to drop to 3rd and almost redline. No biggie. My friend busted his axle while riding his sand rail so I was called upon to drive into the dunes and tow him back to the camp to repair. I had no problem getting to him about a mile into the dunes, it was fairly flat but a little hilly i guess. We connected the tow strap and the fun began. I couldn't air the tires down due to not having a compressor with us, just a bike tire pump. I had to go into 4 low just to get traction when i started towing him. I have had numerous jeeps and towed many vehicles but never in sand and i was suprised 4low was required. i wanted to try the locker so i locked it and off we went. no problems at all. the sand was very soft in some places yet the 4runner came through. just wanted to share my experience with everyone. what a great weekend and man I need to buy my own quad for more trips to the dunes. pics of the trip available here MobileMe Gallery
