First winter conditions on Nokian WRs

The 4Runner and the Nokian WRs are brand new. 800 miles on the 4runner 600 on the tires.

When I had the WRs put on I could feel the difrence right away, they were smoother than the factory Dunlops and they were a bit noisier but quieter than I expected.

When I arrived on Donner Summit Wednesday evening the driveway and parking lot had 3" of bullet proof ice, great conditions to get a feel of the WRs. Intelligent use of steering and brakes were no problem, anything abrupt would break them loose. Short of studs I don't think any other tire would do better on that stuff. On more normal road icy conditions the WRs were great.

When we get a heavy storm (soon I hope) I'll post my impression of their deep snow performance

Do you plan on running the WR's year round? I'm relatively unhappy with performance of the factory Dunlops so I'm looking at the Cooper ATR's and the Nokian WR's. I'm not willing to spring for a second set of rims/sensors/tires just yet so a year round compromise tire is still a must.

So far my plan is to run them all year. I think they feel fine on dry and wet conditions. I want to buy an extra SE wheel so I can mount an extra pair and rotate them thgough in pairs. This way I will only have a single tire to store. I may alter these plans depending on thread wear but everything I have read lead me to expect them to be good all season tires.

Well, I got to try the WR's out during a powder dump this weekend. Incredible! I couldn't get them to break loose doing anything within sanity. Much better than anything else I have owned.

There are not many followers of the Nokian WR SUV. However, from what I have reaserched, these are about the best money can buy when it comes to a true "all-weather" tire. I am leaning heavily towards these tires for my all-seasons. However, there are not a lot of Nokian fans. I think they may not be getting a fair review, since they are available in so few markets. Here in Alberta, the people I know that have these, swear by them. Are you still enjoying them?

These tires c ontinue to delight me. We also have a set on my wife's Subaru Outback. Good grip on snow, ice and rain yet quiet on dry pavement.

The only thing I don't know about yet is tire wear, just not enough miles to tell.

Did you notice a change in mpg compared with the Dunlops? I know your 4Runner wasn't even broken in when you swapped tires but do you have any guess? Thanks

I don't think MPG changed at all. I have been averaging 20 MPG since day one.
