Fishing pole holder.

So the 4runner took its first camping outing this weekend! And we fit everything we need with ease, and than the "oh crap" moment. Fishing poles!!!! So I moved things around got them in there, but the space they the is horrible, laid across everything, getting bags from under them pita. So all I could think of is man I can't wait to look on the forum and get some ideas on a holder/rack. Yes I searched and searched, with no results. Using the taptalk app. 18 TRDOP, no rack, stock rails.

There are a number of commercial options for attaching to roof racks. BTW, the cross bars for the rack are only $100.

For DIY a popular choice is a 6" or 8" diameter PVC pipe with ends attached to the roof rack.

There's an obscure site where you can search and find a thousand options: Google.
 
I had the same problem and years ago I bought an inexpensive holder deal from Big5 I think - meant to go on a wall I think with 5 holes in 'bottom' piece and 5 holes with a stryrofoam like substance with a notch in it to hold the ends/tips with a ring that would close off the notch. I bought a couple of maybe 1/2" square hollow aluminum bar stock, angled the ends, drilled it at the ends and attached the holders in the middle. Then I simply took off the coat hook holders that were part of the handles above the rear seat doors and attached the ends to either side and did the same in the back. This was on my landcruiser and Tahoe. Worked great for years. Kept them in the car, out of the way and soundless. I don't know if I still have them or if I have any pictures, but if I do I'll post
 
I use a rod holder that I bought years ago. It was on my previous 4Runner. When I got my trail I put a 2” receiver on the front and locked the rod holder on so no one can remove it. Works great for any type rods

There’s always the old tried and true string tied from coat hook to coat hook across the back and the the passenger seat. Holds them up by the roof, inside and out of the way.
 
Inside option

I mounted a d-ring behind each coat hanger in the cargo area & ran a climber's nylon daisy chain between them. I carry guns by running the barrel of each gun through individual loops & let them ride butt down at a 45 degree angle. If you did the same in the back seat area, you could run each rod through 2 loops & it may keep them up out of the way.
 
i use to keep the poles in the car, until people started complaining that the inside of my car smells like dead fish (especially in the summer time).

Now they ride on the roof in the snowboard/ski rack.
 
I have an Inno overhead rack in my GX. It holds everything from my freshwater trout rods up to my multi-piece surf rods with ease.

The rod holder taper toward the center of the vehicle so I can fit 4 full sized adults without hitting their heads on a rod.

Also, the center section that the rods are held comes off so I can store part of the rack away during the winter without going through the whole song and dance of removing and installing the whole rack all the time.

I removed all the ceiling handle grips and screwed on some hinges that have a ring in which I use bungee chords and Velcro to lay and hold the poles in place. I'll try to post a picture later. It's for my 4th gen but maybe it'll work or give you some ideas.
 
Love the ideas. Thanks everyone. It’s almost fishing time here and I just got a 4Runner have always had a truck bed.
 
Found my old rig. Total cost was about $15. Not sure if it will fit in my new vehicle I hope to be picking up tomorrow but will see when I get home. It only holds 4 not the 5 I thought originally, and I have no idea why I painted the ends red - just cuz I guess. The rod handles go through the one at the left which mounts at the back of the vehicle near the roof, and the tips go through the on on the right which has those little rings which turn to lock/unlock the tips in and mounts above the rear seat. Worked great for years! For you guys mounting rod holders to the front and rear bumpers, my hat's off - you must fish way more than I do!
