Fishtailing --So where is the VSC?

Hey Folks,

So our Sport Edition fishtailed today, okay okay , I made it fish tail in the snow, but the odd thing is the VSC didn't come on. So what determined if VSC, TRAC, etc are warranted and then applied?

It should kick in when a wheel slips. When you fishtailed it on purpose, how did you do it. By turning the wheel and slamming on the breaks? You may have done it in a way that the 4runner was actually doing it's job, by not letting you force it to start slipping.

I generally try to fishtail by turning the wheel and slamming on the gas... But as my other post states, i cant get it to happen in my T4R.

morphius909, did you have the diff locked?

Yeah you just have to wait until it slips on it's own. It's too smart to be forced by the driver.

Try doing a doughnut in the snow, mine seemed to beep like crazy and it wouldn't allow me to do a full one, it cut my engine power so to keep moving I had to lock my diff.

The only time I have ever had mine go off is when I came into the driveway too fast.

yeah mine does that all the time. Welcome to a very safe vehicle.

Nah not really lol. But when I move to denver i will only be about 30 miles from you and then I will. Plenty of snow then. My first choice for a while was actually Boulder but the girlfriend wants denver.

It really depends on what you want. Schooling, Boulder is better. Nightlife, Denver is better. Isn't too big of an issue because I can get to Denver in 30 mins max, and I get to stay out of a HUGE "and in my opinion" dirty, city.

I'm trying to figure out how to handle the VSC yet to my advantage. If it starts going off , what do I do , counter steer , hold vehicle straight and not steer ??? whats the best way to keep control

As far as doing donuts in the snow , I lock the diff and go hog ass wild ............ . its cool because when you want to get moving at take off the Atrac kicks in and your off and roosting snow from every corner of the truck.

I just continue driving as if it were dry (with a little counter steering because its in my nature and how i learned to drive.) Seems to work the best. Take it slow, don't be afraid to put on the brakes, and remember its a 4WD so you can pull out of a fishtail (I can say this because we have VSC.)

If you fishtail, don't just slam on the brakes. Just take your foot off the gas until it corrects itself.

First post, I apologize for being a boob and rather ignorant of motor vehicles...

My 2000 4R fishtails all the time and generally seems to have horrible traction in 2wd...we've had it since it was new, and it doesn't seem like it was always like this. Any little acceleration around a turn on a wet road causes the rear end to slide out! Seems dangerous. Also, have to put in hi-4 just to get up a steep but paved hill near our house when wet. Have great tires and a 60lb bag of sand.

Anyone know omit there might be something wrong?

Don't try to pick a neighborhood from a distance. When you get here check out Front Range 4x4 and we'll show you around. We do plenty of runs of all kinds from easy/scenic to hard-core and you couldn't meet a nicer group of people.
