Fixed my cheesy-looking license plate

I didn't realize how cheesy the dealer-mounted front plate looked until I saw the pic of my headlight mod. Kinda reminded me of glasses repaired with electrical tape.

A little trim with sheet metal shears, these guys to plug the holes (Menards), and a couple toggle bolts, and voila....

Much better looking! Of course perfect would be no plate at all. I'm in your same boat, state law says I have to have a front one too. I'm curious with people mounting them back there how 'legal' it really is. Technically, if I read correctly a while back, even the goofy plate holder/trim with the dealer name is illegal to have it it even remotely cuts off the plate anywhere. The way it read made it sound like if it covered the metal edges it was bad. I doubt a cop would pull you over for it on its own, but if caught speeding or running a light, depending his/her mood, you might run into trouble. Just have to check your state laws.

Scr*w it. More of the plate shows now than it did with the LP holder on it.

I decided to live dangerously - this way I can get busted for plates AND lights.
 
i live in downtown denver. parking enforcement drives around throughout the day looking for misplaced tags, expired stickers and outdated registrations. i bet that wouldnt fly out here.
 
You are also blocking significant air flow over whatever heat exchanger is located down there. Trans cooler, if we have one?
 
I call this the ralphpolo88 mod. I have been running it for 19,822 miles now, JohnJerk, and it's not made a whit of difference to cooling via airflow.

PS: looking good philsey, nice touch with the nylon nails.
 
The holes in the bumper kill it for me. I like the plug idea, but only if no plate at all. With plate, it's blatantly obvious you moved it there, and IMHO, meh.

I agree. You could get those filled and painted although it might cost a couple hundred and the BP is a tough color to blend. Just depends how much it bothers you.

My father in law touched up my parents bumper when they removed their front license plate and you couldn't even tell there were holes before.

Or you could use a dab of white marine silicone and wipe it flush. It would fill the hole, nothing sticking out, and it would be white. Not a perfect match, but so small and flush that it would be hard to see.

This is a good idea... suppose it'd hold up to the car wash?

As to the naysayers, I have no choice in having a front plate, so all I could do is attempt to make it less ugly than it was.

There's no fan down there, is my guess. Still, I would agree, that you aren't ruining your truck. Perhpas if you tow near capacity or something, this may not be ideal.

The biggest improvement visually is getting rid of the Quad Cities advertisement. The change in placement isn't really a big change in my eyes.

:wtf: In my area, ours have computer mounted cameras on their enforcement vehicles, Mobile License Plate Recognition (MPLR) that scans license plates to determine which vehicles have delinquent parking tickets, or warrants, (priority is tickets, though). The current program includes two vehicles equipped with MLPR systems that generally operate standard weekday hours and special events. A third MLPR was recently deployed and new early morning, evening, and weekend shifts will be added. In addition, the city is attempting to enter residential areas. On average, one vehicle using the MLPR software can scan 3,885 license plates per day with an average of eight hours of scanning. For July, the department has reported the collection of boot and tow fees from 2,220 vehicles, totaling approximately $1.14 million. More than $500. per vehicle.
