fixed my inoperable rear window this weekend

This is my second post since I posted a week or so ago after picking up my 90 T4R. I picked it up for $1000, and as expected the rear window hadn't been working for some time. So, this weekend, I resoved to fix it. It wasn't easy, since the window was frozen in the up position. After removing the two interior panels (the carpeted pop rivet one and the screwed on metal one, a quick voltage check showed that the motor was receiving power, but frozen. My dad, a friend and I were working on it together, and we were actually able to get the window down after removing the motor. All you have to do is manually move the two mechanical lever locks on the regulator mechanism and push the window down. After inspecting the motor, it was clear it had both rusted, and frozen due to the fact that the inner bearing (which is plastic) for output gear shaft had worn down so that the gear could wobble and actually freeze against the plastic motor housing. To make a long story short, I called around, and the cheapest replacement motor was going to cost $275!! The dealers wanted $350!!! (I can imagine they'd charge $1000 or so to fix the problem) We decided to try and rebuild it. (my dad is the knowledge and expertise in this story) We fabricated a new inner bearing from a plastic dowel we lathed down to size and then drilled out. We drilled out the motor housing to fit the new bearing and scraped and sanded off all the rust. Put it all back together and voila!!! Back in business. All for the grand total of $15 in plastic, glue, C clips and gasket sealer. Oh, and about 8 hours of time..........but the sense of accomplishment makes it worthwhile. Next job up........ a transmission troubleshooting session to find out why it sometimes won't go into overdrive, and the kickdown doesn't always work until I drop below 2000 rpm with my foot flat on the floor. Little by little I plan to get this baby back in perfect condition ending up with a new paint job. I love the idea of creating a nearly brand new 1990 T4R.
If anyone else has a similar issue, I'd be glad to provide more details if you decide to tackle it.

Sounds like you are off to a good start. Dad sounds like he might be a keeper with skills like that.:D

Me too. I just replaced the regulator and motor in my 89. Both were pretty rusted and teeth missing. Found a regulator on ebay for 20 bucks. I guess the motors for '90's are different. I got a new one at autozone for 80. It was cheaper than the remanufactured model. I did grease the hell out of everything, might get another 20 years out of it!!!!
