Ok, I have searched and read every thread I can find on this subject. I am getting a set of rear 07 fj cruiser coils to go on the rear of my 98. From what I can find it seems that I might gain 1-1.5" in the rear and stiffen up the rear end some for a little better handling for towing and such. I was just trying to confirm my findings. If anyone has any input or comments they will be greatly appreciated.

I believe the FJ coils will only work on a 4th gen ('03-09). You want to look at front Landcruiser FJZ80 coils for the rear of your '98 if you want to keep it all Toyota parts. There are different sizes of LC coils out there ranging from ~3" to 5" of lift on a 3rd gen. If you want 1-1.5" though, your best bet IMO is to get OME 906s or just some 1.5" spacers for the rear.

Brian is correct, the FJ Cruiser coils won't work in your 3rd Gen.
Just curious as to why they won't work. Are modifications needed to make them fit. I will see what exactly needs to be done to make these fit. My curiousity has gotten the best of me now. I will tinker and try to find out what needs to happen to make these fit. Thanks for your input!

There was thread on Ih8mud where a guy put fj coils on his 3rd gen. He said it road softer and that it was around 2"s of lift.

I got some different coils and shocks(bilstein) for the front and shocks in the rear. now the front is higher than the rear. I know the coils in the rear are shot. I read that thread in ih8mud, that what made me decide to try this. I was just wondering about the lift factor. I have read some gained anywhere from .5 to almost 2" of lift. .5" would not be enough but 1-2" would be just about right. Thanks for the input.

The guy that said he did it on that thread has a post count of 37. That doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about, but I would want to know from a few others that it works before I go buying anything. I'm not sure if the rear coils are the same diameter or not (and if so, they would probably work), but my advice is to go with the tried and true options unless you are trying to be different and willing to risk the $$. If so, let us know how it works out!

I know a couple people that have tried it and it was determined that you would just be better off going with a OME or LC coil.

Not sure about athlo450, but in my opinion, the key word here is FREE. As easy as the rear coils are to install, it's definitely worth a shot before paying to order something different. My gut says you might be right mcqueen, but it's always good to have more real world feedback. Go for it!
It is softer in the rear but firmer, especially when loaded. When I hook up my trailer with the four wheeler, it still sits pretty much level. It doesn't knock my spine out thru the top of my head anymore. The rears are bigger in diameter and a there is a slight modifcation that needs to be made to the cone bump stop that centers the coil. I will get a few pics up of the mods needed when I formulate a permanent fix for it in the next couple days.

So the diameter of the stock coils and FJC coils are identical ? I would have liked to seen comparison photos , see the number of turns, thickness of wire , length of coil , etc
They are actually bigger in diameter. They are slightly taller and wire is alot thicker, much firmer ride but softer over the washboard roads and such, if that makes sense. I have to take them back apart to make a spacer that the cone bumper will sit into to center it in the coil. I will be comparing the top plates as well. I will take pics comparing the coil differences and the mods I use to get this fixed permanently. I am still researching some other options.
