FJ80 tie-rod ends

I have an '85 with stock steering at the moment that's feeling a bit wiggly. As part of an overall upgrade (OME lift, etc.), I'm thinking of changing the tie-rod and ends to the FJ80 size such as the ones that Marlin Crawler sells. Their part number MC13623 in this link:

http://www.marlincrawler.com/htm/steering.htm

Has anyone done this upgrade? Should the drag link be changed at the same time? I couldn't find any info on this site or any of the others using the search engines but if anyone has a thread link that would be great.

I have considered cross-over steering but don't want to go that route - yet.

Thanks :D

Those TRE's are for the x-over steering kit, I don't believe they'll fit the stock steering.

You may want to check the play in the steering gear and the drag link. Especially the DL, there are spring loaded sockets inside that mate with the balls on the pitman arm and J-arm. They wear, and you can increase the tension on them via the big screw at each end of the DL.

Actually the ones that I'm talking about do fit the stock steering. You just have to scroll far enough down the page on the website. :D

Thanks for the other advice about how to tighten up the steering - it sure needs it.

Here is the quote from the Marlin Crawler page and a photo:

Marlink Heavy Duty Tie Rod
Heavy duty replacement tie rod for your '79 to '85 Pickup/4Runner with stock steering. Custom sizes also available upon request (see below). Made from 1.25" DOM .250" wall tubing. The left end has a clearly visible identifying ring, preventing confusion as to threading. Each Marlink includes 2 FJ80 tie rod ends and jam nuts.

By way, does anyone know if the bumper on this 4Runner is an ARB? It sure looks like one.

Ah, I see. I thought you wanted to put the FJ TRE's on the stock tie rod. I missed the part about replacing the tie rod too.
